World Cancer Day - The Online Community is here for everyone

Ahead of World Cancer Day on 4 February 2025 we are highlighting the support shared on the Online Community. As the number of people with cancer is rising, Macmillan are challenging the inequalities in cancer care.

We know that many people's cancer experience can be more difficult because of who they are, or where they live. Our Online Community is here for everyone, whoever you may be, or wherever you live.

By asking the questions and sharing your experience, you all take a part in supporting others. Together, we can make sure no one has to go through cancer alone.

Members of the Community are here to tell you how the Community has helped them and welcome you to join them in the forums.

"You’re definitely NOT alone here. A few months ago, I was on this forum at all hours of the day, and someone would eventually answer." - Community member, bowel cancer forum

The kind of support that you're looking for might differ depending on what has brought you to the Online Community. Everyone's experience might be slightly different, but there will always be some similarities which connect you and help you feel much less alone.

"I totally understand what you are going through,  the unknown is incredibly challenging.  Once you have a plan you feel more in control. It is terrifying,  but hang on in there. This forum is so friendly and supportive and we have all felt those feelings along the way." -Community member, bowel cancer forum

Writing about your experience can in itself help you feel that you are regaining some control. You might just need to get your feelings out, or it might feel good to answer questions or share your experience to help others.

"We are here to tell the experience which is ours alone, no-one else’s." - Community member, cervical cancer forum

You might find that your feelings are more manageable when you have written in the forums about how you're feeling. Connecting with people at all stages of their cancer experience can be even more helpful.

When you or your loved one has been diagnosed, you might find it a comfort to be able to speak to real people who have been through a similar cancer diagnosis.

" I did have a few emotional hiccups and felt very down for a while but the Head and neck cancer forum helped me through along with my family and my marvellous surgeon who was so supportive." Community member, Life after cancer forum

"Never ever apologise for reaching out to us. This wonderful forum is here for EVERYONE and everything."   - Community member, Oesophageal cancer forum

"...stick with the lovely people on this forum as they have been a life line to me. Everyone will be different but stick with the forum for help these guys are true warriors and wishing you all the best x" - Community member, Head and neck cancer forum

When you're going through cancer treatment, or supporting someone having treatment, it can really help to know that there are people who truly understand. Because each and every one of them has been through it, or is about to go through it at the same time as you.

"Chemotherapy can be challenging at times so please reach out for support if you need it. Happy to answer any questions." Community member, Womb cancer forum

"Sharing your journey is very helpful to me. Thank you" Community member, Prostate cancer forum

"Hearing it first hand from someone who has been through it all and especially all you had to deal with during your recovery it really is inspiring." Community member, Bladder cancer forum

We have set up a conversation thread here in the Cancer chat forum if you would like to join in.
