Car Parking- Your Experience

I’m Jess and I am the Campaigns Intern at Macmillan. I joined the team about a month ago and I have been learning all about the different campaigns that Macmillan have; in particular Welfare Reform, Fuel Poverty and Hospital Car Parking.

One of my projects since I started has been to gather information on car parking charges at every hospital in England- about 300 hospitals which is taking a good amount of time! In my research I have found some great examples of where hospitals have listened to their patients and removed car parking charges for cancer patients and their carers. Unfortunately, I have also heard some tough situations where patients are facing high charges with no concessions.

Have you had a good or bad experience with hospital car parking? If so then get in touch, as all the information will help us to campaign more effectively to help eliminate car parking charges for patients affected by cancer.

If you don’t park at the hospital, how do you get there? Do you take public transport? Again we would love to hear your thoughts on the issue.

John and I attend the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. When cancer patients are receiving regular chemo they are issued with a dated ticket which gives them free parking for the duration of that treatment.

They have some disabled bays but the rules have changed recently and there are no concessions for parking in those bays.

Thank you Madge, that's very helpful and great to hear that your hospital is providing chemotherapy patients with free parking in an easy to use way.

I hope you and John are well, I will be updating soon with ways to be involved in our campaign so that all cancer patients get the same high standards as the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

heartlands has a ticket wich costs £26 for 20 visits. A bit different to £5 per visit if you are having chemo but they do not make it obvious that it is available. I found out by chance.

It saves a heck of a lot for me when I have to visit 3 times per fortmight plus other visits for clinic etc.

Mixed experiences, attend the Royal Oldham Hospital, visit at least one every 3 months, being treated for prostate Ca. No concession, but reasonable charge £2 for upto 4 hours, just shortage of spaces.

Same Hospital but new annex, 'Christies at Oldham;, atteneded for RT, 16 consecutive days, free private car park. So Cancer Parking charges

depends on Treatment ?

dad was at the Macmillan unit at Christchurch hospital in Dorset and we were all given passes to park there for free.im not sure if this will count towards the survey as it was the Macmillan unit but thought i would add it for you anyway and hope it helps the survey
