The ungrateful cat

2 minute read time.

I'm an animal lover & Iive with a cat; she was a scrawny undernourished little ball of fur, living rough on the streets when I took her in & then I became her personal slave.

After several years of spitting, hissing, biting & hiding she has finally decided that I'm not that bad for a human, but grateful, she's not.

I'm used to cuddly cats, the type that run to greet you, snuggle with you by the fire & purr gratefully when fed, not one that looks at me with disdain (yes! cats have expressions)

My first night home after my operation, I was looking forward to my bed, I was emotionally drained, sore, in pain, tired, anxious & in need of a hug. I was greeted by cat who had the most remarkable annoyed look on her face (I'm sure if she could talk she would have told me how selfish I was for leaving her home alone) anyway, after feeding her, changing into my night clothes, & preparing my bedside table with all the things I might need, I opened the window, climbed into bed & although hungry, hadn't the energy to get back up & make food.

Cat, after enjoying her meal decided she was bored & trotted into my bedroom, hardly giving me a second look (honestly, cat never even asked if I was okay) she leapt onto the bedside table then proceeded to systematically bat each of my items onto the floor with her paws, helped herself to a drink of my glass of water, walked across me on the bed (ignoring my whelp as she walked across my scar), leapt onto the windowsill & looked out of the open window (that she can easily get in & out of, it's a bungalow you see) then ran straight to the back door & whined & whined until I gave in, got out of bed & went to open the back door for her.

I loitered in the kitchen for a good 20 minutes with a small cup of tea to keep me warm, waiting for cat to come back (she never stays out long) calling her every now & again even though the icy blast from opening the door made me shiver. By this time I started to get a headache & was perplexed as to why cat had not come back, so I slowly made my way back to bed & there she was, stretched out in my bed and I'm sure she was smirking at me!

Note: I have not disclosed cats name in order to protect her anonymity

 •
Peaceful - I really admire how you have decided to protect your cats anonymity and I have to admit that your post is the first time I have laughed in about 4 days. Thank you for that. I have dogs now ( they are small, not bright, not capable of complex thought or behaviour) but have had cats in the past and cats are a whole different ball game of control/ independence/ defiance / and definitely can smirk - one of my cats with a previous partner took offence at her mother staying. Her mother woke up to find the cat backed into her pissing in her face and then pooed on the bed - they are defiantly on the level with a challenging health professional team. I will look out for your next instalment.

 •
NellieJ

I'm glad my post made you laugh, we all need a bit of humour. Cats are great, aren't they, I do hope the mother of your previous partner wasnt too emotionally scarred by the experience (not funny, but it is).

Hope the little dogs are keeping you company x
