The Op

1 minute read time.

Hi im starting this blog with the Op, when i get round to it ill fill in the diagnoses before it. On Monday i had lumpectomy with full lymph node clearance for breast cancer. The operation went fine. The nightmare then started i went back onto a womans health ward with only 10 beds open in a busy hospital. I spent all night throwing up from morphine then some jumped up registrar pops up at the bottom of my bed 8 in the morning asking if he could discharge me? " oh yes please you prick, yes i do know you have people lined up for bed, but i have been sick all night, hav'nt weeed since op and not eaten either and ive got a drain sewn into my armpit.!"

Most of nurses lovely but so busy with shipping people in and out that literally no time to care. I had to ask for painkillers as they had assumed id had some! Near lunch i had to ask for help with washing dressing as was still in undone hosp gown.

Arranged to go home next day after jumped up registrar "kindly" gave me 24 more hours! Moved into my mums for next 3 days as couldnt face going home to 3 kids. Wasnt given any painkillers on discharge and in 36 hours since op nobody once looked at the wounds dressings. Better now for being at my mums but i just wonder what would have happened  had i been kicked home to my 3 noisy, energetic children  for some people it wouldnt have been possible to go to mums.

All in all wish id gone for the op at nearest vets. Should i have to go for more surgery i will probably change hospitals as it was really upsetting and im usually last one to complain and quite hard to upset.

Drain should be coming out today ( day 5) but its still draining 75mls instead of 50mls so i dont know.  xxx

Thanks everybody and hope you are well. It was a bad experiance and the main bugbear was the Dr. But also i did feel some of it was down to government targets about operation waiting lists etc and massive staff shortages in the NHS. I dont know a lot about politics except that the next government has a lot of scope to improve.

I had the drain out and it feels loads better and no problems so far and im finding the exercises ok but its far too easy to guard your arm and breast as if you were in a sling! I keep being reminded to move it!!!!

I had armpit dressing changed as it came away slightly, i just feel a bit grubby and sweaty despite a shower daily, with one hairy armpit! URGHH! Glad its not the height of summer!

    Take care xxx

    Hi Kate

OMG  - that is horrendous care service. I am so so sorry this happened to you - I was terrified of going to hospital, but my experience was really good, I had nothing to complain about. I went to Barts Hospital London and I couldn't fault them. I felt really looked after. I went in the day before the op and came out the day after and I didn't have a drain. Which hospital did you go to?

Take care, recover well and I will join you in the one hairy arm pit forum. What can I say -other than I am with you on that -ARGHH.

    Big X

I can relate to the one hairy armpit! My hospital seemed too busy to look after me. The nurse said I should get up and walk around and then promptly left me on my own. I was worried about falling over. Nobody tied up my hospital gown either. They gave me a glass of water and left it out of reach on a table. I was lying flat on my back and couldn't reach it!  I hope you are feeling better now. Victoria
