“Its now six days until I leave the UK on the first of five aircraft en route toAntarctica. My main worry now is expedition bags getting mislaid at airports. Simon Garrod has flown south to the Polar regions. Everything is ready. We’ve researched aerial photos for possible routes and peaks to climb. I fly via Miami and Santiago to Punta Arenas, near Cape Horn, then we’ll take a Russian cargo plane to ANI’s tent camp at Patriot Hills. We may be delayed several days because of likely katabatic...

I’m leaving tomorrow at 0630. It’s a frosty English morning, and I’m not relishing the thought of spending the nights in my tent at minus 20 degrees! I’ve finished my training programme, which has been mainly on the stair machine at the gym, sometimes with big mountaineering boots on. I usually do the equivalent of the Eiffel Tower in 13 minutes, taking my heart rate up to 145. Also dragging tyres through loose gravel, and climbing the local hill with my backpack loaded up with water bottles. Swimming...

"Still in Punta Arenas, but we nearly flew south to Antarctica tonight. Alas, the katabatic wind at the blue ice strip at Patriot Hills is still too strong: 35-45 knots, and blizzard conditions. 15-20 knots is the maximum crosswind for this Russian cargo plane on the ice. Gusts have reached 61 knots, which is a big crosswind, given that winds above 64 knots are hurricane force. The main mishap so far was my skis being put on the wrong plane from Miami, to Argentina instead of Chile. I've...
  • Punta Arenas - South Chile still

“I thought we were going to get out today, but the wind at Patriot Hills rose again last night, and its back at 32-42 knots again (blizzard levels). The art of forecasting katabatic winds is still in its infancy, so we are somewhat in the lap of the gods. These conditions can last days or weeks. Yesterday, I went for a great hike along the cliffs on the edge of the Straits of Magellan, with views sixty miles to glaciated peaks in the west. I visited a reconstruction of a fort built in 1843 of logs...
  • Punta Arenas - two hour alert

    peter.clutterbuck's blog
I'm on two hour alert through today, ready to take off any time. We're reminded of the need to be careful in Antarctica, as passengers and crew have been airlifted to Punta Arenas from the MS Explorer which sank two days ago after being holed by ice. Winds at Patriot Hills have dropped, and we are now waiting for overcast skies to improve visibility requirements. I've been hiking on a 2000 foot ski-hill with some of the staff from Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions (ALE), which organises...
