I'm Alessandro, the Public Affairs intern at Macmillan. I’ve been here for just over a month and I’ve been working hard along the rest of the team on our ‘Put the fair into welfare’ campaign to make sure that people with cancer continue to get the critical financial support they need. Now that the Bill has finished its passage through the House of Commons, it’s a good time to look back at what the campaign has achieved and how we will take it forward now that the Bill enters the House of Lords.
Macmillan has been arguing the patients receiving oral chemotherapy and radiotherapy should be automatically eligible for Employment and Support Allowance, just like those receiving non oral chemotherapy. And thanks to your support, the Government has agreed to look again the unfairness in how the benefit system treats people receiving different types of cancer treatment.
There is still work to be done though and we’ll continue to push hard for changes to the Bill where we have serious concerns.
Your support has been essential, so please keep an eye on our campaign page for new opportunities to get involved.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
