Hysteroscopy operation & triggering memories.

Hi all,

My name is Tan, I'm new to this group and this is my first time posting.

I have Endometrial Cancer and am due to have my third hysteroscopy on the 12th of August, along with having some lymph nodes removed.

I wondered if anyone could give me some advice on a triggering subject, which is completely different to this, but the operation itself is triggering me into some unwelcome flashbacks and PTSD.

Without going into too much detail, I was raped last year and suffered a very violent attack. This has left me with PTSD, social anxiety and generalised anxiety disorder. I am now totally freaked out about having this operation, the thought that I will be under anaesthetic and will have another person touching me 'down there', completely terrifies me. I don't know how to handle this situation and as the days near closer, the anxiety is building more and more.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice to help?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.

  • Hi Tan, Welcome to the group. So sorry about your diagnosis and am very sorry to hear you have been raped sweetie. I wonder have you had or got a counsellor to discuss your concerns? Also would it help if you had a female doing the procedure is that something you can ask for? I wish you well hunni xxx Holland19

  • Hi Holland19, thank you so much for your kind reply. I am on a waiting list for specialist counselling, but they tell me it will be a year on the waiting list before I can be seen. I did speak to someone on an online forum, specialising in rape. They suggested relaxation and grounding techniques, but I'm struggling with this as I cant relax my mind enough to begin with. Unfortunately, my consultant is a man. He has given me assurances that there will be females present during the operation, but it does little to ease the flashbacks.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post and reply, it truly means the world to me. Take care darling SunflowerRevolving hearts xxx

  • Your very welcome Tan, that's terrible that you have to wait a year to get specialist help. Can your GP not help at all?? I really feel for you hunni Disappointed and hope everything goes ok for you and will look out for any future posts. Holland19 xxx

  • Thank you so much for your kind replies. I have been through my doctor to access Talking Therapies, I had 6 sessions but then the therapist said that the help I need is too specialist for what they cHeartn offer, so I've kind of hit a stumbling block with that. I wish you all the best with your own journey. Take care sweet HeartStar2Sunflower xxx

I'm so happy to hear that you are doing physically well, long may it continue. I truly wish you all the best.

  • Hi Tan,

Sorry you find yourself here. At first I didn't know how to respond to you. I really feel for you. All I can say is that in time you will learn to trust men again and realise that not all men are the same. I'm sure the consultant is a caring man, and there will be nurses around.

I know how you must be feeling. My grand daughter (age 10) was attacked by a dog last year, and badly bitten on her arm. She is now absolutely petrified of any dogs. She hides behind Mum when a dog is near. I do hope that in time she gets over this with the help of counselling. Time is a great healer.

Wishing you all the best. xxxx

  • . Hi Tan, welcome to our little spot in the Online Community. I'm sure the ladies here will offer the support you need.

I'm so so sorry to read what you experienced last year and how it has left such a lasting impact on you. I can well understand why you're freaked out by the prospect of the procedure. Please rest assured there'll be a whole team in the operating theatre and they'll all be there for your wellbeing. I'd recommend when you arrive for your pre-op admission, make your fears known to the Nursing staff, I'm sure they'll do all the can to reassure you.

In the meantime, we're all here to hold you hand or send you a hug and listen.
