Hi
I feel a bit silly posting on here because I have not had any diagnosis of cancer up to yet.
I had a neck scan for a cyst at the back of my head and neck pain and do have a little trouble swallowing but nothing major. They found a thyroid nodule by incident.
it's 11mm x 12 mm
It's classed as a u3 apparently and is solid with more of a blood flow than they would like to see.
Anyway I was sent for a fna biopsy and my results are thy1 indertminate. I was sent then urgent to ent and yesterday I was told that they want to do another fna next week and then go back to ent the week after.Â
I asked if it comes back the same what next and he says surgery to remove half the lobe.
I don't really want surgery naturally and asked what percent turn out to be cancerous. He said 20% chance which is 80% chance of not.Â
My thyroid tsh test is normal.
Has anyone with a u3 nodule been in this boat and does anyone know if the nhs do the afirma test yet? Â I've had extensive surgery a few years ago for a cholesteatoma which had grown everywhere and although not cancer it had done a lot of damage.Â
Is it definitely true that with half the lobe you don't need any medication? My function test is fine atm.Â
Thanks to any replies and I realise I have not been diagnosed and 20% chance is low.

I had my FNA this morning and it wasn't too bad really. I find out in two weeks but the radiologist thinks its probably not cancer, because I've had the nodule for two years. I'm not sure if he's aware that the other hospital noted changes last time,.that were not there before. I have faith that they'll analyse the sample and hopefully come to the same conclusion.
He said I need to ask my GP to refer me to a thyroid specialist though. Not sure why, but didn't dare ask, I will just bombard my GP with questions when I get my results.
Just wanted to pop back and thank you all for all of the help and information, its been tremendously helpful in my long wait to have this fna.Â
Good luck to you all and thyroidnodulehelp I will keep everything crossed for you.Â

Hi jessy
Glad you didn't find your biopsy too ooh painful. So you had your nodule for 2 years anyway? Â What then led to you having the biopsy? Was it just symptoms? I hope you get a good solid result on yours. Mine is taking up my mind all the time atm. I can't stop thinking and my head hurts so much. It's not just that, I have other things too but must admit it's not going away lol.
I have wanted to bombard my gp but I find them difficult to talk to tbh. In fact I have never mentioned symptoms. I doubt they would listen anyway. I once complained about my ear op and from then on I feel awkward with the nhs. Oh well. Just have to hope for both of us. At least you can go talk to yours. Good luck and stay positive.Â

Well today I missed a call on my mobile and it was my consultants secretary asking me if I would come for appointment on Thursday at 3. I am now back panicking tbh because as I thought this was all done and dusted until 12 weeks time. I know when I spoke to the consultant last Monday he agreed with my wanting a rescan in 12 weeks but I did ask if it went to that mdt thing again and he did say yes. I don't think at the time we spoke it had been as he'd only just received the thy1 result again so I am just hoping this is a mix up with appointments. I just hope they haven't discussed something and need to discuss with me. How does this all work? I'm no good at appointments and just want to get out. I hope it's just a mistake.. I'm not going to tge the appointment and shall ring his secretary tomorrow. I did try to call but no answer. I just hope he can tell me (if it's not a mistake) anything over the phone.
Do the mdt people make decisions as I thought my consultant had agreed. It went to an mdt before but are they involved still even when we'd planned my care? I also remember when I went for my second result when it wasn't back he said "the scan looks good". I'm sure there is a mix up.
EDIT
it was just a mix up. It was because I had my results over the phone and she hadn't realised.
I'm pleased that it was just a mix up and that you can more or less get on with your life at least for the next three months before your next FNA.Â
I had my first ultrasound two years ago, which fortunately didn't warrant extra investigation, so I was told I didn't need the FNA because it was just a cyst. I honestly thought great that's the end of that!
Fast forward to February and GP referred me for an ultrasound of my neck and collarbone because of plain I was getting in neck/shoulder and arms. I'd also noticed from December 2016 that I had enlarged lymph nodes in collarbone and neck that I hadn't really noticed. On the way out I mentioned that my thyroid cyst felt 'different' and I'd also been suffering with a irritable throat since December too, so she referred me for an ultrasound of all these things.
Day after ultrasound I received a call from GP saying they wanted to do a repeat ultrasound and FNA because of 'changes' that were not there before.
Three months later they did the ultrasound of the left side of my neck and collarbone and thyroid. I didn't realise but I'm thinking now that they think I may have had a lymphoma going on??? Daren't ask though! I'm slightly concerned that he didn't realise that the changes in the thyroid were new. He said he thinks that it should be OK and if it grows again he will biopsy again in three months. I came away feeling pretty confident. My nodule is only about 1cm now  but I can still see it and it still moves when I swallow but I'm fed up with having to clear my throat constantly as my voice keeps going croaky. He also said I need to see a thyroid specialist.
So I'm quite hopeful of a good result in about 10 days time. I'm hoping he knows what he's talking about!Â
Hi jessy. Wow two years is a long time then to know you had the nodule but good that it was fluid filled I guess. I heard about cyst things on the thyroid . Mine is solid he said with no cyst content but although most cancers are solid, most solid nodules are not cancer.Â
Can you not ring up about the results earlier? I rang about my second ones, and although my consultant was ringing me supposedly that day, she did give me my result in the thy rating. It's a horrible time waiting. I also had lymph nodes up but 12 months previous and they stayed up for months. They were all around my head base of skull, behind ears one large one in the side of my neck. I must have had an infection going on. The one that was up for years but never changed suddenly got infected and turned into a boil so maybe it was not a lymph node after all, maybe it was a cyst after all. Anyway that is how I went for my scan. I also had neck pain left side and fullness feeling and do swallow a lot due to eustation tube problems for a long time. This was found incidental.Â
I'm sure you will be OK. Lymphoma was something I looked up too lol. Purely because I had lots nodes up but only neck and head. I now think infections. I know my radiologist did say she couldn't see any lymph nodes. Did you ask when they scanned or did they mention it. I think she did mine purely because I had gone for the lymph node/cyst/boil problem.Â
Anyway let's hope we are both ok for now.Â
Can you please tell me if you have, or had, positive results for raised antibodies  or any other signs of lymph node infection in blood tests? I was just wondering because I read that  swelling is more likely to be cancerous if blood results are all clear? Thankyou, from Caz.x
If you are talking of pre diagnosis blood tests it would be unusual for those to look at Antibodies or lymph issues. Â Usually it's just a simple thyroid function test to rule out that the lump might be due to overactivity. So it's only true to say that the test makes it more likely to be cancer because it rules out one of the non cancer issues.
It's still statistically more likely to not be cancer.
Best wishes
Barbara

I actually was under immunology a while ago after having my ear trouble and ramsay hunt twice. My antibodies (functional) were actually all low so they gave me the pneumonia jab to see if it raised them which it did do some. I have also had a raised white cell for years and was sent twice to hematology because of hidden infections. So yes, I have had antibody troubles and blood test troubles but more infectious I think. Neutrophils and these were checked at another hospital. T cells and NK cells. I remember writing it into my phone. Nothing was ever diagnosed as such though. I just kept having tests. I actually attended the cancer centre too. Not because of cancer, just because things were out here and there. I was also diagnosed with thrombocytosis too some years ago. Raised platelets. Unknown.
My tsh is normal they say so it's not affecting my thyroid function it seems but I do have thyroiditis symptoms. I have never actually said it though but reading about it I do. I may mention when I pluck up courage to go to my gp.
Hi Caz
I actually haven't had any blood work done for two years that I'm aware of. I did have a full blood count done around three years ago because of tiredness and illness ( kept getting chest infections and had pneumonia ):but it all came back OK, so I've never questioned it. I had a thyroid function blood test two years ago when I first found the thyroid nodule...again it came back normal. Which is why i'm puzzled at the request to ask for a refferal to a thyroid specialist. He said GPs don't always know how to read thyroid function blood tests. Now how I'm supposed to put that statement to my GP I don't know! I also had cellulitis and was hospitalised for three days on intravenous and oral antibiotics and also antibiotic cream last September, so I would have thought any blood work issues would have been mentioned to me then.
I do have a lot of raised glands apparently but they haven't really gotten any larger in the three months, so I'm not too worried about them. I have a lot of allergies, so I'm guessing that's probably the connection. I think they were concerned because they're up on the side of my thyroid nodule (left).Â
I think barbaral has probably been more helpful to you than me.Â
Hi jessy
I think there are more thyroid function tests than just tsh to rule out thyroid problems. They obviously won't rule out thyroid problems I guess until they have ruled out cancer if you get what I mean. There is thyroid t3 and t4 and thyroid antibodies too.
I honestly wasn't concerned at all after the first ultrasound confirmed it was just a cyst. Thyroidnodulehelp. It was the scan in February that noticed changes that were not there before, that required further investigation. The lady that did the ultrasound in February said I had a loot of raised glands on left side of neck and collarbone. I actually had no idea they were going to rescan them this last time. I thought it was just the thyroid nodule that needed biopsying. They haven't grown I don't think, so unless I'm told otherwise, I think they are just allergy related.
I thought the radiologist had drained all of the nodule, but I can still see it, albeit smaller, but it's still there and still getting the annoying croaky voice etc,
I think i will wait the two weeks for results, ignorance is bliss lol
Hopefully  we can both have a good result....snd anyone else going through this worry at the moment.
xx
