Waiting for MRI results

Hi just joined this group, my son has been for MRI for suspected sarcoma in calf, we have been waiting 12 days for results. Friends keep saying we would have heard by now if it was cancer but I am driving myself insane with worrying. My son is autistic and 23 he cannot chase results himself and hospital won't give me information coz he is adult. Anyone know how long results should take if it's bad news?

Thanks to anyone reading this.

  • Hi

Welcome to our community, I hope you find it both informative and supportive.

I am Steve one of the community champions on here. My experience with cancer is via my wife who has Leiomyosarcoma. We do also have a son who is autistic and who will shortly be 21.

I know sometimes we have got results quite quickly for Janice when there was something fairly obvious wrong - in her case this included a collapsed lung. Sometimes however we did not get results until an oncology appointment so it can be hard to say.

Our son has had a number of health issues himself but in his case my wife would normally explain she is his carer and we have never had an issue with getting information about him. We did have an issue with him going for a blood test and taking tablets but after a couple of recent operations he seems to manage now.

It might be worth checking with your son's GP to find out when you will find out because we all know that waiting for results is really difficult.

    <<hugs>>

  • Thanks for your reply Steve, so sorry to hear about your wife and wishing her well. I will say that I am his carer in future calls including to GP and hopefully that will help. The hospital said results would go to his GP so I will keep chasing them. The waiting is awful and I keep veering from thinking it can't be that bad if we've not heard yet and thinking it's the worst case scenario because it's taking so long!! Patience never my strong point. My son seems very calm but I don't think he has even contemplated that it could be cancer. Anyway I'm hoping for the best and trying (unsuccessfully) to prepare for the worst. Thanks for taking the time to message me and wish you all the very best.
