Pelvic floor exercises after surgery

Hi BertieBB. I'm hoping someone from this group can come along soon to answer. I obviously have a different cancer to you and I'm not medically trained but the last thing you'd want to do is dislodge the catheter.

It might be a good idea to give the Macmillan Support helpline a call, freephone number shown below and speak to a nurse. I'd also say give your CNS a call but I know they tend to work Monday to Friday.

Thanks for tour message and advice.  I’ve found out from Prostate Cancer UK that pelvic floor exercises should be restarted immediately AFTER catheter removal if possible.

Hi BertieBB, I hope your recovery is going well. I was told not to start the pelvic floor exercises until the catheter was removed. 

Thanks Ido4.  I’m 6 days post surgery, early days I know, but am feeling much better than I expected.  How have things gone for you?  I’d welcome any advice regarding dealing with urinary incontinence.

Hi BBB, you will leak when the catheter comes out, I was warned but didn’t really believe I would leak! I was dry overnight immediately but leaked on exertion during the day. Slowly but surely doing the pelvic floor exercises, resting regularly, and slowly increasing walking distance things improved to the point where I was pretty much ok. Unfortunately I had a cancer recurrence and was given salvage radiotherapy which has left me slightly incontinent. Sounds like you are doing well post surgery, long may it continue. 

Hi Ido4, thanks for sharing your experience.  I’m sorry to hear about the recurrence, looped the radiotherapy has sorted that.
