Lump where melanoma was removed

I had a stage 1a melanoma removed from the side of my face/next to my ear around 18 months ago. I'm now 7 months pregnant and have found a small hard lump next to the scar. I saw my dermatologist a week ago and she said it may be scar tissue but did a biopsy to check. The results are due in another couple of weeks but as the lump wasn't there a while ago I'm not holding out much hope that it's just scar tissue. Has anyone had this? Do you think the fact that that I'm pregnant and my immune system isn't working as normal makes it riskier if it has come back? I'm exhausted and breathless which are probably just down to pregnancy but I can't help wondering if these are bad signs.

Hi , a very warm welcome to the online community and congratulations on your pregnancy!

I see that you joined some time ago but that this is your first post.

It's always very scary when you find something close to where your original melanoma was so you did the right thing in seeing your dermatologist. Hopefully, the biopsy will show that it isn't a recurrence but scar tissue as the dermatologist thinks. I had a small lump appear at the end of my sentinel lymph node biopsy scar but the dermatologist diagnosed it as an infected follicle which some prescribed cream got rid of. However, it was scary when I found it and I presumed, like you, the worst.

Waiting for results never gets any easier and it's natural to think that anything else you notice, feeling tired, etc means that the melanoma has come back. Did you mention this to the dermatologist? If not, perhaps you could give your SCNS a call tomorrow to put your mind at rest.

I didn't reply when I first saw your post yesterday evening as I was hoping that someone might know if there's any relationship between pregnancy and melanoma. While waiting to see if you get any other replies you could try using the search facility in this group to look for older posts relating to that.

You could also ask your SCNS this question or post in ask a nurse and one of the specialist cancer nurses will aim to reply within 2 working days.

When you have a minute it would be really useful if you could complete your profile as it really helps others when answering, or looking for other people with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself . To do this just click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Do come back and let us know how you get on

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I must have joined when I first had my melanoma, although I don't remember doing it! I'm pretty sure that I'll just get told until the biopsy results come back they won't know whether the symptoms are just caused by pregnancy or anything else, so I'll just have to wait.

Hopefully it's nothing to worry about, or if it is, that I've caught it early. I could certainly do without the worry at this stage of pregnancy though!

Thanks again for getting back to me.

Hi

I was wondering if you'd had the results back yet from your biopsy. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they were negative.

Hello, sorry for not coming back! Yes fortunately the results were negative. I've still got a big lump there so will ask my dermatologist to have another look at it at my appointment next month.

That's great news , although I guess you wish that the lump wasn't there.
