I've never been a big drinker but in the past have always enjoyed a glass of wine either with my partner on a weekend, with a meal or  if I socialise wirh friends , a drink or two is nice.

But ever since I've started treatment all wine, even the expensive plonk, tastes like Vinegar!

So I thought, I know, I'll get on board with the gin and tonic  brigade.  Not much better. Tastes terrible even if I make it with lemonade and add ice and slices. I don't like prosseco and can't stand beer either.

I know some people would say, well have coke or lemonade from now on  but really, the way I look at it, im only here once and going through a terrible time and now even  this one ittle vice is being taken off me???

Any tips appreciated. What have you tried that tastes nice? Wink

  • Nooooooo!

I've had this, but generally when my body has been on a downer.   I just drank tiny amounts or not at all, and didn't particularly enjoy anything.  Once the body was on the mend, then normal service resumed.

Hope someone has some ideas soon.  You're right, you need treats and wine right now.

  • I'm not drinking alcohol at the moment - I just don't feel like it. During the hot weather I've explored a variety of drinks and really like the flavoured tonic waters. The citrus one served with ice and a slice of orange is delicious on a hot day, as is the elderflower tonic water with ice and a slice  of lime. There is a really nice Robinsons lime and mint cordial which I like with sparkling water and chopped up mint - bit like an alcohol free mojito.  These drinks taste nice and I don't feel deprived or missing out when others are drinking merrily away. Hope this helps as there are some lovely new flavours around.

  • Thanks for the tips Hetty!

I will look out for some of those tonics. They sound refreshing.

Something I've always loved on a hot day are milkshakes.  Proper ones -  made with ice cold  milk, a dolliop of real icecream plus fresh strawberrys or bannanas,  all blitzed in a blender and served up in a long glass and so thick the straw stands up by itself.

But nowhere seems to make them any more. Its all sickly caramel lattes or frappes and smoothies on the menus, or,  horror of horrors thin watery nesquick.

Bring back proper milkshakes I say!

That's just reminded me.  I used to live in a hot country years ago and my parents would invite guests round for barbecues and the highlight would be Dom Pedros at the end. Sort of a boozy milkshake for grownups, if my memory serves me correctly.  Not that we were allowed any,  as we were children at the time.

Now that's an idea. (Off to buy a blender Wink) and  to Google Dom Pedros.

  • What about a pimms? You can put strawberry’s and mint in there, although I find it much too easy to swig down, telling my children it’s only like lemonade……until I stand up.

Baileys is my tipple, and they do lots of different flavours now, pina colada, red velvet, chocolate….. all very nice.

  • Lots of good ideas!  Think I'll just give up on wine for the time being. X

  • Mote ideas! Thanks! Xxx

  • I used to only drink at weekends but when I started my treatment and after a few weeks I totally went of alcohol. I then didn't touch a drop for 4 months. When I had my 1st it tasted great but after a couple more I just didn't like so now I'm into soft drinks and you no what I feel a lot better so I don't need alcohol. Not much help to you

  • Hi Muffin break

i totally agree with you, I did touch any while I was doing chemotherapy, I tried it once for a treat for my birthday in April and I couldn’t get on with the taste, since then I have stuck to soft drinks, that seems to work for me. Before my diagnosis I did enjoy a few glasses of wine and a brandy or two.

  • Hi Donna I'm off to crete in a few hours that's where I miss having a drink. Since a young age going to Spain and Greece I would have my 1st drink at 11am round to pool, and now can't even sit in the sun . It's my Stepdaughter wedding so i will have a glass of something. Take care Rob
