Hi- im sure i am worrying for no reason. I finished 35 days of radiotherapy on 22 January on my neck and tonsij area.So whilst i await follow up,my tumours have shrunk and i am starting to eat and gain wait. However my throat still feels raw and tender when i swallow?? Is this normal after eight weeks- just paranoid that cancer is still there and regrowing etc, Any advice appreciated.

  • Morning, just saw your post, and I feel for you, so sorry you had to go through this treatment, I guess your treatment was a little different to that of my husbands,he had 30 rounds of RT and 2 rounds of CT for his throat cancer and swollen neck, however he's now  nearly 11wks post treatment, and still has problem swallowing, also it is getting easier, slowly but steady,I can only imagine that your throat is still healing, my husband had his first follow up and everything looked promising, and is now having to cope with all the side effects of treatment .When is your follow up appointment? Try not to worry too much. I am sure your treatment was successful and this pain is part your healing process.  Hugs. Mel x

  • Hi
    It’s just early days.
I was on morphine till 12 weeks. It was 6 months before I was happy with my eating.

  • Hi Jimbo. Yes it’s early days for you like Dani I was still on opiates at 3 months. I treated recovery like a marathon not a sprint our bodies heal at their own pace

Recovery is one thing g we can’t hurry. My pt ct scan was 18 weeks post treatment I always knew that it would be then so I sat back and slowly recovered. I made a great recovery and am still here almost 7  years later.

  • HI Jimbo

Alas it is perfectly normal.  Even a year post CRT I sometimes find my throat gets sore swallowing.  When eating "little and often" is a good rule to apply.  That way you don't traumatise your throat too much with the swallow.  I often find I still only eat half a "normal" sized portion, put it aside and come back to it later.

  • Hello

8 weeks sounds like really early days to me.  At that stage I was pretty much RIG dependent and certainly wasn’t putting on any weight….so I think you’re doing pretty well.

Even now I still have my bad food days.  I’m in no pain whatsoever, but, this is going to sound daft, sometimes it’s as if my throat just gets fed up with swallowing and goes on strike half way through a ‘conventional’ meal.  I just go for small portions of things I know I’ll get on with, try to push the boundaries with things I think I might get on with, and topping up with supplements like Huel when necessary.    My scans were clear, so these issues are not indicative of a recurrence.  It’s just that these things take their own sweet time.

    Good luck

  • m just a natural worrier-

It’s the pressure of getting well again. It’s not helped by our teams telling us we will feel better two weeks after treatment end. We all march at our own pace and to our own music but we get there all the same.
