Hi Due to start treatment soon for tonsil cancer. Read up on peg fitting etc.

This is probably going to sound like a silly question ( please dont judge) but if things get bad and you have to use peg , does that mean that you actually stop having the ability to swallow at all or is it just food?

I want it clearvin my head what im facing.

many thanks

  • Hello there, so sorry that you to are having difficulties to cope, however my husband had his PEG refitted as the previous one was in place for 3months and was due to be replaced, however, tuned out that he new one was too tight,I called the hospital explained the situation and we went back to loosen it up, no questions no 'silly' advise, surprised that you didn't get the option.Hope you are getting better with not to much further complications, not would you guys need on this journey. All the best xx

  • It all depends on how badly damaged your throat or.  Much of what you can do will depend on how comfortable you feel in swallowing.  I was able to swallow throughout but unable to eat after the final day of treatment for around 6 weeks.

You really need to remain comfortable and not get into the mindset that swallowing is a no-no due to perceived pain when attempting it.  Eating may be impossible for a period of time, but it will come back and over time you will get better and better.
