It’s been one year after tonsil cancer and still hard to eat for my husband. He has to have water, he sometimes cough, depending on the food. Some things just don’t want to go down, thought it would be easier by now. Anything have this problem a year later?

  • His neck doesn’t look swollen but it feels hard, but he did have a neck dissection too, he lost some muscle and nerve was affected the dr said.

  • Has any massage been suggested? Something gentle might be of benefit.

  • He’s so worried tonsil cancer coming back, nothing is getting better, he did have neck dissection in sept, that slowed things down a bit. Some things we don’t know if it’s normal or not, day by day we think the worse. He was last checked his throat four weeks ago.

  • Your husband has an appointment at ENT tomorrow doesn’t he?
List all your concerns. Two copies. One for you to tick off and one for consultant. Go through them one by one. It looks ok isn’t enough. Ask what are the reasons for looking ok.
That's not to suggest the tonsil cancer is back but you do get complications elsewhere.
You could ask for a swallow test and a neck scan to check the remaining lymph nodes are sound, the extent of the scarring and what to do about it.
    Best of luck.

  • Thank you, I will.

  • He had appointment at ent, he addressed our concerns, explained his neck being hard, did the scope. Back of his throat looked irritated maybe from something he ate, like some hard food. Down his throat looked good nothing different. He took a piece of skin from that area in throat, he said it looked stringy, he didn’t think it was anything, took biopsy just in case. Bloodwork was good. Now my husband is worried about biopsy. The worries are never ending. I felt better the dr explained everything.

  • Hi good that consultant had a good luck round and is being thorough Try to keep him positive the consultant has done biopsy to reassure him. Not easy but you can’t change it’s been done so try to put at back of mind.remember they know what they are looking at they see far more throats that we do.
     Sending hugs.

  • Good evening ChrisB24, it sounds as if your husband's consultant has listened to your concerns and checked him over which all sounds good as he could not see anything sinister, my consultant would take a biopsy if I were concerned about anything, this happened a couple of times but come the biopsies came back all clear, im sure this will be the same for your husband, lets hope your husband can relax over the Christmas period. Best wishes, take care.
