Cervical cancer....waiting for tests

I'm new to this forum and I'm absolutely petrified.

I have been on mini pill x 2 for last 20 years due to bleeding .

In this time I've had odd bleeding but more so recently when nurse dropped my pill down to 1 tablet.

I had a large bleed in January which was like a proper period and a few weeks ago ...kind of breakthrough bleeding.

Mentioned to my nurse and has sent me for ultrasound.

It was an internal scan and the lady who did the scan said that my cervix wasn't the right shape and that I should get checked out at drs.. s

Was seen by a doc last night who has seen the scan and looked at my cervix and she said it was enlarged and then went into let's get bloods as oncologist gynae will want a ct scan and need a kidney function as they put dye in. I am no longer bleeding as back on double pill  I'm now waiting to hear from the fast track team to have an appointment but I have just crumbled......I'm having panic attacks, can't sleep or eat....the wait is agonising......has anyone else had experience of this???

  • Hi  and glad you've come to join us-I hope you’ll find it helps you to be here.

I can feel the panic through your words and I’m sure that others in the group will identify with the feelings of fear while you’re waiting for your referral -waiting is one of the worst aspects of this whole process when you don’t know if something may be wrong.

I don’t have experience of being told I had an enlarged cervix but maybe some others in the group will be able to identify with this. I think to be honest your doctor will have ramped up your anxiety by mentioning oncology, and scans with dye etc at this stage before you have even been seen by a specialist.

When I was originally referred to a gynaecologist, the first appointment I had was to discuss my symptoms and have an internal examination and hysteroscopy (tiny camera into my womb)  and some punch biopsies of something he could see. Everything else came later, but only when I’d had a diagnosis from the biopsies.

Try to focus on what you know for now, which is that you are having an investigation done, but try not to let your imagination run riot without any diagnosis. The diagnostic process takes time and involves a lot of waiting but that’s the same for all of us and it’s hard. You may want to get some help from your doctor if you are experiencing panic attacks and not being able to sleep as this will be difficult for you to manage if you can’t get this under control on your own. Our minds are powerful things and can lead us to dark places at times and I do understand panic attacks and anxiety as I’ve suffered from these before myself. Getting some help from the gp can be really beneficial.

I hope you don’t have too long to wait to be seen, and that you can get some reassurance about what’s going on. I’ve seen many ladies come to the group in a panic who didn’t have a cancer diagnosis but just wanted somewhere to vent their fears and worries and that’s fine-this is a safe place to do that and we can identify with your fears.

I hope you’ll keep posting and let us know how you get on.

    Sarah xx
