Waiting for staging

hello,

I am new here after being told on Monday I have a high chance of cervical cancer - severe dyskaryosis on my cervix. Abnormality being 3-4cm long.

They took a few hole punch biopsy’s on Monday, and I had a ct scan & mri this week. Now i am waiting for the results which is really nerve wracking as all I keep thinking of is the worst.
I was meant to be starting a new job in two weeks, which I am probably going to have to decline because of needing time off for treatment.

My symptoms have only been heavy bleeding, which has been constant for the last 5 weeks now. Stupidly I missed my smear test after I had my child (2yrs ago) due to having a traumatic induction.
I am kicking myself now for not attending but at the same time I wouldn’t have been able to cope with a diagnosis and a newborn!

I am just so scared of what the final results will be…I have a gut feeling it is has spread due to the constant bleeding (even with meds to stop it).

thanks for letting me express my thoughts and feelings x

  • Hi  and welcome to our group.

You’ve come to the right place to express your fears and worries-I’m sure most of us have had the same worries when going through testing and being diagnosed.

Please don’t beat yourself up about not attending your screening-you’re not alone in that, and the main thing is that you’re having these investigations to get answers for your bleeding. However, you are thinking too far ahead, worrying about cancer spreading when you haven’t had a diagnosis yet, but you have had biopsies and scans very quickly which hopefully means not too long a wait for results.

I had very heavy bleeding and a lot of pain on and off for a whole year before I even went to a doctor, and although I did get a cancer diagnosis it had not spread much-only a little into the tissues around the cervix, but still very treatable. Bleeding might be an indication of cancer, but it’s not an indication of spread. Try not to rush ahead with your thoughts, and take things one day at a time for now if you can. Things do become easier once you know exactly what you’re dealing with, and how it will be treated.

It’s very difficult to be in this waiting period for results, and especially so for you with a very young child and a new job on the horizon, but I’d hold off making any decisions about your new job until you know more. If you have a cancer diagnosis, the staging will determine the treatment required so you have a bit of a wait yet to find things out.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you are, and feel free to ask any questions here. Between us we have lots of different experiences of different treatments,.

  • thank you for responding, it means a lot at this scary time.

I had my meeting on Thursday, I have been staged at 2B.
The consultant said it’s best not to start the new job, and focus on myself before the treatment starts.
Now it’s another wait to meet the oncologist consultation and to get a pet scan.
I feel somewhat better knowing that I know what it is, so to speak.
I am focusing on being as positive as I can xx

  • Hi

It honestly helps you being able to think positively-I was diagnosed at stage 2b in 2018, and I definitely think you need to concentrate on yourself for now. Your team will be treating to cure, so please focus on that.

The treatment can be tough, it’s intensive, but it’s over a relatively short period of time and lots of us have been through this so can help from our own experiences.

It does help to know what you’re dealing with, and hopefully your petscan will confirm the stage. Let us know if you have any specific questions as you go forward,

    Sarah xx
