Hi
I’ll be starting Chemo soon and wanted to hear from anyone who had the Cold Cap.
Did it make your time at the hospital much longer?
Did you have to have your hair cut beforehand - mines nearly waist length and really thick, so is it still possible?
Was it really painful?
Thank you so much xxxx
It’s a lot to take in, before long you’ll be an expert, sorry to say. Just ask as many questions as you like, we all started knowing nothing! If you click on some of our names you’ll see our journeys and some tips, I’d also urge others to complete this a little, so that we know the right advice to give, even if you just put your diagnosis and treatment plans, helps people who’ve been through it to tailor their advice x
Ah ok - thank you.
Im having 4 x2 weekly of EC
then 4x2 weekly of Paclitaxel.
Just so much to take in xxx
Just to say there’s a Paxman Scalp Cooling Facebook group (Paxman make the cold cap system). It’s really good for all kinds of questions from what type of shampoo, what to wear for chemo, icing hands and feet (to stop neuropathy) and what you can expect when cold capping.
I also found that my oncologists were pretty negative about success rates for cold capping but it does work if you stick at it. You won’t keep all of your hair but most people seem to retain enough that they don’t need a wig. Concentrate on what you have left on your head, not how much hair you lose. It is painful but take some paracetamol before you start as it’s tolerable. I felt it was worth doing.
The Paxman website also has a predictor for how much you will retain based on your hair type and chemo regime. I had a 50% chance of retaining 50% or more. I retained about 60% but lost it at my crown and the volume of hair dropped. It’s growing back quickly. Best of luck!
You are on the same chemo regimen as me.
The cold cap did work as I've not lost all my hair after my 4th EC but the side effects weren't worth it.
As you go through this journey you will see what works best for you going forward
I am very glad I tried it, no regrets at all!
xx
