Hi.im 46 and I have recently been diagnosed with ILC , er8 pr8 her2 neg, oncotype 21. My oncologist explained im borderline with a 6/7% recurrence chance so chemotherapy is my choice. I said no the other day but now think I’m regretting it?? Any advice grateful x

  • It all depends on your lifestyle and circumstances and whether you have family support, financial situation etc, etc so it is really difficult to give advice.
I had lbc 8.5 years ago when I was 43. Then I wasn’t given a % recurrence or oncotype. From scanning, they didn’t think there was node involvement but when I had surgery 14 out of 18 nodes contained cancer. I just wanted to throw everything that I could against it as I was only 43. Chemo was no way as bad as expected but I did have to give up work as I work with children. I did not lose my hair as I used the cold cap. I do now worry about recurrence every now and again, especially if I get any aches or pain, but I know I had everything offered.
6/7% is really low though. It’s amazing that you have that information.

  • Hi. I know it’s hard to know what to do but just some info I was given.
so bcn told me that with under 50’s the oncologists like you to have everything regardless of type of cancer etc because you have more life ahead of you and can generally tolerate it better with a better outcome. I looked at all the young people that had had it a very long time ago and are fine now and the common denominator was they all had the chemo (kylie minogue, sally dynevor for example).

Also the Oncologist said to me she would have always recommended chemo to under 50’s regardless of oncotype result because not only do you have more life ahead of you but you still need to go through menopause which can cause breast cancers.

Why don’t you find out what drugs they’d recommend and do some research into the effectiveness then make a decision. You could always try it and then if it made you too ill you could stop it. I’m doing it for prevention also but my oncotype was higher. I said to my oncologist I will just see how it goes and she said yes you can stop it at any time if you want to and we will support you.

As my bcn nurse said it’s 4 months out of the rest of your life and you’d probably feel better knowing you did everything. Its cells that can lie dormant circulating in your body you don’t want to risk developing in the future.

I took details of the type of chemo they wanted to give me and did lots of research on it and it seemed very effective.

I think ultimately they don’t know for certain whether it will come back or not. Smokers have a high risk of getting cancer but they don’t always. It’s just one of those things isn’t it.
