Walking back to Happiness

Well. Welcome to this thread.

You may be surprised why it is here or happy it is here. Then again: ‘You have got to be joking! Do you know what is wrong with me?’ may be your response.

This all began on the Extreme Fatigue thread. On there several people wanted and needed inspiration/incentive to get out and walk. Many people see the benefits of it in their life and to help on this; mad journey, train ride, rollercoaster ride and other positively rude words journey called Breast Cancer.

It is not a thread created to make anyone feel less than they do at present. It is not a thread that will set people against one another. Being competitive with yourself or a simple challenge to yourself is the point, but not a race against others is a key premis.

The idea is that you can do any of these or none:

  1. Post when you have walked.
  2. Post how many minutes you walked for.
  3. Post how you felt before, during or after. Or not at all.
  4. Post pictures from your walk, but ones that do not point to where you live.
  5. Post inspirational quotes, thoughts or comments.
  6. A simple like of people’s efforts is fine. No need to write an essay unless you feel the need.
  7. On a safety note. Do tell friends, family or the thread when you leave and return safely. Be aware of your personal safety at all times.

Well here goes.

Either it will grow and blossom, with lots of lovely people benefiting. Or I will have egg all over my face – not for the first time in my chequered life and career.

Leolady – may be adding in the odd gallop to my walks.

PS if you don't like us don't be cruel.

  • I liked BHS   We went to the Luminere pre lockdown.

  • Lovely photos everyone! Can’t go back far but remember from another thread that you’ve had shingles  , sorry to hear and glad you’re now on the mend. Had a lovely walk with friend to next town and back (cafe stop there of course), all beginning to look quite autumnal. Glad that it’s cooled down a bit, particularly at night, happy to welcome in the autumn properly after the recent unseasonal heat! Though we did have a cracker of a storm yesterday. A few photos from by the river….. love to all, HFxx

  • Glad you got back to the van  , and Dexter looks smart if rather serious!!
Am away with hubby for short jaunt in Europe, had 2 nights in Brussels, now in Berlin for 4 then back home. All journeys by train, my new aim is to see more of Europe but without flying. Have clocked up a few miles walking in both places. Photos below from Brussels, cathedral and then some live music!

  • I like the thought of train journeys instead of flying   Did you book train tickets yourslf?

Not done any walking past few days courtesy of what I thought was Flu but today tested positive Covid. Just when I thought I could venture to a shop at least. Hey Ho.

  • Wow that sounds like a bit of an adventure. I bet the train service was better than ours. Purple heart

  • It was quite an adventure  ! I’d definitely recommend getting around by train as you actually see where you’re going! But of course you have to factor in the time taken, my way of looking at it is that the holiday started when we got on the Eurostar for the first ‘leg’ to Brussels. We booked them ourselves  , so returns to Brussels through Eurostar and then the Brussels to Berlin returns through DB (Deutche Bahn). Might be better ways to book, I’m no expert! Got tips from ‘the man in seat 61’ website, would definitely recommend this too! It’s all free advice and he just asks readers to donate to UNICEF if they’ve found it helpful.

It was a great trip but I did find it exhausting, partly because we picked up an unwelcome souvenir in the form of a nasty cold! - not Covid, thankfully. We walked a lot in each city and visited many lovely cafes (as well as museums and other places of interest!). Had a basic but nice hotel in Brussels, great location, but much preferred having our quirky apartment in Berlin. For a future trip I’d go for a minimum of a week, probably 10 days. It was a lot of travelling for 5 days actual holiday. But happy with our first venture into exploring Europe by train. I did the classic interail month with a friend when I was 21, sleeping in youth hostel dorms and often on overnight trains, definitely not quite so resilient in my 60s…..xx

  • I’ve always loved the idea of travelling around Europe by train.  I’ve seen some spectacular routes and overnight sleeper trains too.  I’m looking forward to trying it.  Your trip sounds fab.
