On and off for the past year I haven’t felt right. More often ‘on’ over the last 3 months
I’ve had general discomfort in my abdomen and my stools have varied but more frequently become semi formed. It’s not diarrhoea but it’s not a typical stool. Sometimes when they’re soft I’ve noticed they can almost have a square edge to them, which sounds bizarre I know
I’ve had bright red blood on and off over the past year but tried to convince myself either piles or constipation
I’ve had heart palpitations and breathlessness and fatigue, which I tried to put down to too much exercise, not enough sleep, poor diet and just getting closer to 40
ive had some repeat urinary infections, one with blood in it, and generally just not feeling well most of the time and not being able to get back to ‘normal’
After going back and forth to the doctor I had a positive FIT test of 28 and they’ve referred me for more investigation within two weeks
Needless to say the combination of symptoms plus fit test has left me feeling anxious. I had previously been to doctor about concerns but felt I was too young (39). It was another gp that suggested the FIT test and taken it forward.
i don’t drink or smoke, my weight probably falls within typical range for height and build, I fluctuate with exercise levels though have done more in last year but dropped off about 4 months ago. I would say I eat more processed and red meat than is recommended.
has anyone else been in a similar position before and how did they manage their anxiety? I feel like I’ve had my head in the sand, wish I’d gone to the doctor sooner but for feeling scared or being seen as silly put me off
Hi Garden1352e25bc and a warm welcome to the board. 28 is a pretty low reading and there are a few things that can cause blood in the stool like diverticulitis, colitis, polyps etc. and only 1 in 10 colonoscopies results in a bowel cancer so hopefully you’ll get an appointment through soon.
Please don’t blame yourself or feel silly. We all stick our heads in the sand from time to time but the important thing is that you’ve been to the doctors and you’re going to get checked out
Please let us know how you get on?
Take care
Karen x
Thank you Karen for taking the time to respond.
And thank you for your reassuring words that I’m doing what I can now to get it checked - that’s all I can do in this moment
Im at the hospital on Monday so I’ll come back with an update once I have some feedback.
Hi Garden1352e25bc. Take a look at my post here on controlling anxiety:
Hope it helps x.
Thank you, the progressive muscle relaxation and breathing I’m going to try over the coming period I think. I’m trying to be rational but sometimes anxiety just gets the better of me, these techniques will hopefully keep me grounded
I just wanted to post that I had my gastroscopy and colonoscopy and the doctor confirmed all was fine. My positive FIT test was probably the result of a small tear
I was very anxious before hand, worrying about the result after having not been feeling right for months, and also anxious about having the procedures of a gastroscopy and colonoscopy
I’m in my late 30s and I would say anyone in a similar position of having symptoms it is worth going to your doctor, doing the FIT test and having the necessary investigations to either address any issues that might be uncovered or put your mind at rest. I spent a long time worrying when I wish I’d been a bit more forward sooner.
Im having a follow up consultation to discuss what might be causing my stomach issues but at least we’ve been able to rule certain things out
Thank you Karen and MicroMaster for helping me manage my anxiety
That’s great news Garden1352e25bc and some very wise words too.
Thanks for the update and I hope you’re able to get to the bottom of your stomach issues
Take care
