Next week my husband has to make the decision whether to have the traditional ten week wait for surgery, following his five weeks chemo radiotherapy. ( Rectal cancer T4N2M0)
Or to go straight onto 3 months Capox - which the oncologist explained has a 50% chance of removing the tumour completely, thus not needing surgery.
I asked about this here when we were first told, and was kindly given a link to Rapido .
but try as I might despite lots of reading and googling, I can’t find any documentation of where people have had this, and not needed surgery. Everything I read seems to mention this approach simply as ‘ belt and braces’ BEFORE surgery, but NOT instead of.
we’re just gathering information as much as we can before we have to make this decision- next Wednesday so I’m hoping someone can help?
many many thanks
Hi Nora. That’s a tricky decision. His present staging would indicate that there are affected lymph nodes or have they been zapped by the radiotherapy? I’ve attached a link to a post by Dancingdoll67 who was in a similar position. You could also type ‘watch and wait’ in the search box which will bring up previous posts from people in a similar situation - Jogey is a success story but there are others who have had the cancer rear it’s ugly head ahead and then had to go ahead with surgery
You can also ring the support desk on the number below and talk it through with them too?
Take care
Karen x
Hiya I had capox followed by radiotherapy and I had a complete clinical response. No op needed and am now on watch and wait ..just had a CT and an MRI...all clear so far. I'm coming up to a year since the end of my radio. The chemo is tough and the pins and needles and cold sensitivity take some getting used to but for me it was certainly worth it. I was T3 N1 M0. If it does come back then surgery is still an option.
Wishing your husband all the very best.
