Hi I’m on my second cycle of Oxaliplatin and Raltitrexed (Tomudex) for 4-5 hours at a time sometimes longer I have really bad hiccups often 5 hiccups at a time rather than just one. I’ve never really had hiccups before and so must be something to do with the treatment or side effects of various tablets I’m on. It’s horrible and although I have a technique to stop it  I wondered if anyone else had a similar experience/advice??

    Hi

That must be exhausting ! The above link does suggest chemotherapy can be responsible so you may need to speak to your oncologist as the leaflet does seem to suggest there is help out there for such problems .

Our helpline staff might have more insight on 0808 808 0000.

    Take care ,

    • Thank you I’ve mentioned it a few times but because other side effects have been worse havent really pushed it. Also it’s never lasted more than a couple of days which is a relief - but yes it is debilitating and doesn’t help with the feeling sick/ nausea!

Thanks so far tucking my knees under my chin and holding my breath seems to work but is a bit hard work. I tried a spoonful of sugar which helped a couple of times but the effect didn’t last long.

  • I was told to hold your breath and swallow three times . Sometimes fail on the second but if you manage the third it seems to settle .

  • Hi DE55, I also experienced terrible hiccups the first two days after the Xelox infusion. These are caused by anti sickness tablets called Dexamethasone (are you taking them)? For me the hiccups only lasted 2 days whilst taking the anti sickness tabs.  I tried all techniques but non worked. They would die down after a couple of hours.

Hi Bertz that’s really useful to know - I was on dexamethasone and as you say the hiccups only lasted a couple of days - but those couple of days were horrid. As mentioned tucking my knees under my chin and squeezing hard did seem to work at least for a short while but depends on your agility - it is quite strenuous!!
