Does the rectum continue to narrow with scarring and do the muscles propelling the stool become less efficient with age and time? Stool is soft but painful passing as passage is so narrow now.
Hi Nana42
Im sorry you are having problems, I think you would be best speaking to your doctor. You are much further down the line than me, but in the literature I was given to read prior to my treatment it said that you can get issues from the radiotherapy years down the line one of those was radiation fibrosis which is the scaring, but like I said speak to your doctor he/she will be able to reassure you and advise you. Sorry to not be much help. Sending hugs. Xx
Hello Nana42
Unfortunately anal stenosis seems to be relatively common after pelvic radiotherapy. I had to take Laxido daily so that my stools were extremely soft as on the very rare occasion that I became constipated I couldn't pass anything at all. In the end I had an elective stoma which sorted out a lot of the problems, I have some issues at the moment but am seeing the consultant next month who will hopefully be able to help.
One of the suggestions prior to the op was daily stretching with a dilator - I think perhaps I should have persevered with this, as unfortunately with scar tissue a once-off stretching isn't sufficient as the area just contracts again.
Might be an idea to discuss this with your GP - mine referred me to a colorectal consultant who has been most helpful.
Irene xx
