Blue Badge under "Hidden Disability" rules

Posted by

Has anyone been able to get a Blue Badge by virtue of their Cancer, rather than the mobility criteria?

I have a number of other conditions, including anxiety/depression, T2 Diabetes, Arthritis, replacement knee (other needs doing), etc, but worry it's not enough?

The hidden Disabilities rule is still quite complex and although county council have been set guidelines interpretation of them can differ between the issuing authority.

When I apply for mine I ask for a paper version to be sent rather than fill it in online.

It sometimes helps to get help completing the  form from Macmillans or Citizens Advice as they are used to completing them.

This might help you fill in as many of your ailments as possible.

 What are the hidden disabilities?

While the catch-all phrase encompasses many health issues, here’s some of the most common:

  • ADHD
  • Amnesia
  • Anxiety
  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Asperger’s Syndrome
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Complex mental health disorders
  • Epilepsy
  • Huntington’s Disease
  • Irritable Bowel Diseases
  • Lupus
  • ME
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Ulcerative Colitis

This is not considered to reflect an exhaustive list.

What are the new criteria?

The new criteria will extend eligibility to people who:

  • cannot undertake a journey without there being a risk of serious harm to their health or safety or that of any other person (such as young children with autism);
  • cannot undertake a journey without it causing them very considerable psychological distress;
  • have very considerable difficulty when walking (both the physical act and experience of walking).
