Travel Insurance

Can anyone help point me in the direction for a good travel insurance company that won't rip my off with ridiculous premiums??

Hoping to go to New York with my best friend next spring but need to get this sorted as i certainly can't cover the medical fees myself!! Most people i called said they won't cover anything related to my cancer nor the fact I now have no spleen so that rules out most things i'm likely to get hospitalised for!

Just trying to move on and do some things i've always wanted too but yet another hurdle!!

Thanks

J

  • Does the same apply to travel if you have been given the all clear? I appreciate if you are undergoing treatment that you would be charged but what if you are free following surgery? I'm just on annual checks now
  • Karina   just seen your post and the honest answer is it will depend on his symptoms and if they do quote the cost will be high, I have read others who have posted costs in the thousands and often it excludes the cancer which means it is of little value.

Have you talked to macmillan for help and advice and I would also try some of the specialist charities to see if they can help with the trip?

You will also need your husbands consultant to say he is fit to travel.

  • Tull  if you are asking do you need to tell the insurer you have had cancer the answer is normally yes, I have not come across a company that says they will insure you without having gone through screening.

  • Not entirely John, more to do with the cost if you have had cancer and have been told that you no longer have it. I assume they will still rate you but what are they rating against if you've been given the all clear.

Totally agree to about full disclosure

  • My experience has been that premiums vary a lot, so how they rate the risk, I will never understand as when I have declared my illness and the effects chemo has left its always the same questions, so they all use a similar screening process.

Twice I have discussed premiums and once I was told the increase from £28 for a holiday in the March to £98 for a similar holiday in the July was because the company had reappraised its rates, in other words they had had more claims so needed to recoup the costs.

The second discussion was how information was handled when declaring conditions and it came down to how many things you declare as they have various thresholds and once you move from one band into the next irrespective of the conditions it triggered a higher payment.

The whole system has been proven to not be able to rate the risks of the many forms of cancer by several of the charities, so its pot luck and deep pockets on some occasions.

  • Thanks john. I guess it's a question of shopping around. My parents live in Orlando so that might be a costly trip. It's weird but I've never been ill throughout treatment and yet they fail to underwrite the risks correctly
  • Hi again,  we go to america most years and have found sometimes an annual policy was cheaper so don't rule that out, you can also get the option of not being insured for bowel cancer (in your case) my concern with that would be if you needed to claim would they say you illness was liked to the cancer or treatment. So I have never taken the risks but I know others have. As an example for joint cover I have paid between £120 and £180 per year and £90 for a single 12 day trip for joint cover and that includes a number of other problems I have to declare due to the chemo.
