How long before taste returns to normal?

Hello. Have popped onto this forum from the Oesophageal Cancer forum to ask a question about FLOT chemo.

My pathway is 4 rounds of FLOT, operation 6 weeks later, then 4 more rounds of FLOT. I've just finished my first 4 rounds and my operation is scheduled for 9 October so I'm at an in-between stage at the moment. The FLOT destroyed all normal taste within a couple of days of round one, so I'm yearning to taste food normally again.

My question is, how long after chemo does your taste return to normal please?

I'm 3 weeks post last chemo, and although some taste has returned, anything sweet still tastes vile. Unfortunately with oesophageal cancer eating healthy and as much as you can is advised pre-op, so I'm trying my hardest not to lose weight. However, with sweet stuff still tasting horrible I'm finding anything loaded with calories isn't very palatable still. Luckily I can physically eat anything now (a big relief, as was previously living on a soft diet), but I yearn for a cream cake to taste like a cream cake and not bitter lemon!! Thank you.

  • Hi  oh the million pound question. This can be ever so different even with a group of people who have the exact same cancer and been on the exact same treatment.

I have a rare blood cancer and have talked with people who have followed the same journey, some had no issues, some found their tastebuds recovered a few weeks after treatment finished yet others took months.

My last chemo was very strong and it took a good 4-5 months to say it had fully recovered……. during these months it’s was all about getting fuel into my body and nothing to do with enjoying food.

It may be worth putting your question up in the Gullet (oesophagus) cancer group as you are comparing notes with others who have walked the same journey,

  • Thank you for your reply. I am on the Oesophageal Cancer forum, so will ask on there too, although I suspect others will answer the same. I'll just have to be patient I guess, and just enjoy more of the foods I can taste properly :-) I appreciate your time though.
