Hello, I am a carer for my Mum who has secondary breast cancer - she is starting chemo the week after next and I am worried about going back to work myself because of coronavirus & putting my mum at risk.  I have been off all of the lockdown as I work in a Primary school & haven't returned as I have asthma and I am in the clinically vulnerable group.  However, they are nudging me a little to go back next week as they are short of staff.  I am so worried I will pick something up and give it to my Mum.  She doesn't live with me (about an hour away) but I will be taking her to her appointments and being there for her whenever she needs me.  Do you think I should go back to work? I'm anxious about everything going on as it is!

  • Hi and a warm welcome to Carers. It's bound to be a worry for you and I understand your predicament but no-one, unfortunately, can advise you with any information other than the latest government advice here. Perhaps you could chat to your mum's specialist nurse for advice? Sorry I can't be of more help.

    Hugs,

    LoobyLou

Thanks I was just hoping perhaps someone here might be in a similar position. The gov guidance didn’t answer my question & Ive  been trying to get hold of the support nurse for a couple of days now.

    Hi Molly,

I’m in a similar situation with my mum. I’ve ended up moving in with her during lockdown to look after her, but am now really torn about leaving/going back to work. I also work in education and I’d thoroughly recommend speaking to your teaching union about how you’re feeling and they’ll be able to offer you some advice too! It’s such a big unknown, so of course you’re going to feel anxious about it. Just know you’re not alone x

I’m new here too, although I did pop in once or twice a couple of years ago when my mum was first diagnosed with breast cancer. Covid is an extra worry we could really do without isn’t it?

I’ve thought about doing that but hope it doesn’t come to that.
I’m not in a union unfortunately, I’m just an admin/reception - and mostly they have been really good to me, I’m just torn like you. I did get to speak to the support nurse today but she couldn’t really advise me either! She said I should just have a frank discussion with my manager & see what can be done. It’s really good to not feel alone, thank you. Scary times. Pensive

  • This is my worry too. I have been working at home and now my husband who has terminal cancer needs 24 hour care and I am worried what  to do if they want me to go back to the office. I can’t afford to give up work but I don’t know who will care for him.

have you spoken to McMillan for work advice as a carer? You do have a lot of rights - might be worth a call to put your mind at ease? take care x
