Hi all , my father is currently at home receiving palliative care , four visits a day , and is allowed night care 3 times a week with NHS funding ! The other four nights I am having to do myself as I am the only family member , but I currently am finding it very hard to cope with having to work also ! Is there anywhere else I can get more support for night care ? Perhaps another 2 nights from someone else  as I think I could manage 2 nights ok ! Any information would be massively appreciated , thank you .

  • Hi

have you been informed of putting an assessment of need in with the local authority?

    HI

I'm very sorry to hear about your dad and it must be very difficult looking after your dad and working

The first thing I would suggest you do is get in contact with your dads GP and explain your situation and ask if he can arrange the extra 2 nights you need.

mentioned, above, having a needs assessment carried out on your dad by the local county council Adult Social Care Team, you can refer your dad to them yourself and this tells you more about it and how to contact them Needs Assessment  at the same time you could ask for a Carers Assessment

    This might be of interest

Would there be anyway you could change your work pattern to make the nights you have to look after dad easier, under the Equality Act 2010 you are allowed certain rights to ask for a change of working arrangements and this Macmillans leaflet will tell you more Your rights as a carer.

Depending on who the NHS has contracted to care for your dad you may find it of interest that Marie Curie operate their Marie Curie patient services where they look after terminally ill patients, your dads GP would need to make the referral.

If your dad was willing there maybe a hospice local to you where your dad could go for a few nights per week.

My last suggestion would be to ask if your dad has applied for an Attendance Allowance. I am assuming he is retired and of pensionable age. This allowance comes in 2 rates, the first rate is for someone who only needs care during the day and the second, higher rate, is for someone like your dad who needs 24 hour care. As your dad is terminally ill he should be granted it very quickly, it's not mean tested and not charity and the allowance can be used for any purpose and I am thinking that maybe the weekly allowance may cover self funding a carer for 1 extra night.

Very high on your priority list is making sure that you are fit and healthy to look after your dad unfortunately if you are not running on full cylinders you won't be able to give your dad the care you want to give him, you must look after yourself.

I hope the above is of interest and if you need any clarification on my suggestions you are very welcome to speak to one of our friendly telephone support advisers for more advice, they can be contacted on 0808 808 0000 any day of the week between 8 am and 8 pm, at the same time you maybe able to speak to one or more of our specialist advisers for more advice.

Please keep me informed how you are getting on and if I can be of any further help or you need to ask me questions I'm around the site every day just give me a shout out at anytime.
