Has anyone tried targeted non-toxic cancer drugs? Has anyone heard of, or used, a company called Oncologica (based in Cambridge) which claims to match Cancer mutations with potentially effective targeted cancer treatment drugs?
Hi and welcome to the community,, before your message I had never heard of Oncologica but just had a look at their website. It appears to offer genetic testing that might help identify which cancer treatment might be most effective but I cannot see anything about the things they suggest being non-toxic.
What form of cancer are you looking at, there are a whole slew of new drugs being developed all the time but many are still in clinical trials and often only available via NHS if conventional treatments have not had a normal response.
Terminal stomach cancer. Conventional treatment led to a stroke, so cannot be repeated. Herceptin worked for a while, but not anymore. Tumour is growing significantly again. SO no option but to look at alternatives like "New Targeted Treatment Drugs", by doing Cancer mutant identification.
Sorry to read this, seems like you are already quite far along as I am sure you know Herceptin is a targetted drug. Hope you get some answers.
I asked one of our nurses to have a look at your question as I thought they might be able to help.
It’s not unusual to have questions about different treatments and the best way to access them.
There are different types of targeted cancer drugs currently in use in the management of cancer.
Each individual drug has known side effects, which can be just as toxic when compared to other treatments such as chemotherapy.
I have had a look at the Oncologica Company you mentioned. This does appear to be a legitimate company offering tests to detect genetic mutations in cancer.
This is one of a number of companies offering genomic or gene testing in ongoing research and development of targeted treatment for cancer.
The NHS England Genomic Project is also currently researching genetic information for the future development of a more personalised approach to treating cancer.
I hope this helps. Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you have any more questions.
Best wishes, Kelly (Macmillan Information Nurse Specialist)
Just a quick update on oncologica.
I have now requested and paid for the test. I was assigned a personal contact via email to guide me through the process. I filled out a simple form with personal details and tumour type. I then sent a photo of a consent form they need to obtain my biopsy samples.
Within 24 hours they had my records and had requested the samples. I received updates by phone and email. It does say the process takes 10 days, which is slightly misleading as it's 10 days from oncologica receiving the biopsies from the hospital.
My prognosis is not great and have just started the last chemotherapy I can have at the moment, so I'm just hoping the results come in enough time to make a difference.
I'll update again once more has happened.
Gemma, I hope you have had some success with your chemo. I' just wondering if the oncologica report has been helpful?
I made contact with this company and my husband checked they had Registered professionals on the GMC. They were very helpful but my situation was not suitable for the service they offered at this time. My understanding was that by understanding what the cancer's "next move" might be would enable targeted treatment to hopefully be more effective.
