We understand that people with cancer are worried about coronavirus. Here is the latest guidance. We will update it regularly.

Breast cancer for the under-50s

Breast cancer is far less common in the under-50s, but this can leave younger people with a diagnosis feeling isolated. This group is a place for them to come together, share experiences and support each other.

Hi

Having read through the posts ,this group has offered amazing advice and support. Just wanted some of that as well . I’ll try and keep it brief. Diagnosed last December in left breast. Face to face meeting with consultant after chemo and told the lump had shrunk 2cm,then 1cm,then another cm. Started at 7 so this left it at 3cm. Since covid 19 ,I’ve had telephone conversations with the consultant after chemo. All the way through my treatment the discussions, plans and even pre op assessment were for a lumpectomy. However the MRI scan revealed it was 5cm ( still a reduction) but now I’d have to chose between hormone treatment for 3 months or a mastectomy. My head is all over the place . If anyone has any advice , or able to share their experiences of either , I’d be so grateful- thank you

Hi

Tricky one to try and get your head around eh ? Especially as you were originally expecting a lumpectomy :-/

Are the 3 months of hormone therapy to delay surgery until Covid eases more, or to find out if you could still have a lumpectomy instead of a mastectomy ?  If not and a mastectomy is now the only way forward it may be better to get the surgery out of the way sooner rather than in 3 months time...

The size is usually an educated guesstimate but it is shrinking down so that is great news.

I'm assuming here you will continue with the hormone therapy post surgery anyway ?

There a quite are few ladies in the Main Breast Group who have recently had surgery so it must have been considered safe to do so. Maybe you could join the Main BC Group as well to ask this question there - Most Under 50's members have joined both groups as it is very active with a lot more members.

Not much help sorry, but it may give you a few ideas to mull over.

Hope you get more replies either here or in the main group (if you join and post) to help get your head around it and make a choice you are happy with.

Take care, G n' J

Good morning

Sorry not seen your post sooner, Hope your appointment went ok this morning.

I was in a similar situation to you but mine was a choice between a lumpectomy and a mastectomy twice, (read my profile if you want to see my story) my breast care nurse helped me a lot on making the decisions i made. She told me that what ever decision you make you need to tell yourself it was the right decision at the time. I had 2 lumpectomies and ended up having a mastectomy anyway and as much as i could say, i wish i'd just gone straight for the mastectomy at least i gave the other options a try.

If only we had a crystal ball. If there is anything you think i can help you with please give me a shout xx

Hiya the script fan

please don’t think that I’m being rude. I went into my junk mail looking for another email ( but that’s a whole different story) and saw that you had posted.

Wow, you really have got a lot of experience. Thank you for getting back to me. Since this time I’ve had the op and waiting for the results.  They should come through in a couple of weeks. I’m doing my exercises every couple of hours .
Anyway, thanks again and stay safe in this surreal world .
