Hi. I was just wondering what type of breast cancer most of you have under 50? HER2 positive seems to be very common in under 50’s? I had HER2 negative and that seems quite common in over 50’s (I had it at age 40).

Just interested to know and see if there is a pattern, wonder what is causing it all. I like learning all the time.

I was on the contraceptive pill in my 20’s so wonder whether that had caused it. I had a baby when I was 36 and apparently the placenta produces a high level of estrogen so maybe that played a part also. But then why does that affect some people and not others.

  • I'm 42 and ER positive, HER2 negative.  I was on the Estrogen only pill since 27 only briefly coming off to have my baby at 36 and that's the only thing I can think of that has raised my chances ( and maybe all the bacon sandwiches I used to eat!).  I'm a small size, no family history, don't drink or smoke and do exercise so fairly healthy.  Also think they say having a baby also decreases chances of having breast cancer.

However even with this, I think I still would have went on the pill as there are so many things out there that 'increase' chances and until they do more research and come out with more information, i think the advantages outweigh the risk.

  • Thank you, that’s really interesting. I am a small size too but have family history so maybe that’s what has done it, who knows, just feel like I’ve made a big mistake in my life somewhere and full of regret for past decisions Pensive

  • I think as long as you lead a fairly healthy lifestyle, there's not really much you can do. It's just one of these things that happen. There's is a breast cancer org out there, I can't remember the name but it keeps coming up on my Facebook feed stating its avoidable which is just scaremongering, it goes on to say all the ways you can help over and above a healthy lifestyle e.g. cut out all plastic and chemicals in your life etc but you wouldn't have a life constantly trying to know what you're supposed to and not supposed to do especially even then it's not even guaranteed! So I wouldn't read much into it and just accept we're one of the many unlucky ones.
