Staging system. Is DCIS included with invasive in the tumour size?

Good evening! My partner was diagnosed in January and is well under 35. We have most of the pathology back but are awaiting the Her2 results.

She has / had large high grade DCIs in the breast 57mm and also 3 small spots of invasive grade 3 hormone positive areas (2mm,5mm and 7mm).

she’s had Masectamy and reconstruction and full node removal. Only one out of 14 was positive.

Has anyone had experience of the staging system as to whether it includes the DCI’s also in the tumour size ? Google is sending me in circles ! It makes a big difference as the invasive cancer is only 1.4cm in total but with DCI’s it becomes 7.1cm. But the DCIS tumour isnt  invasive

doesn’t really make much difference as treatment will still be chemo , radio and hormone. Just wondering if it’s stage 2 or 3 . quite a long wait for oncologist app.

thankyou soo much!

  • When I was diagnosed, they said they don’t do staging. I’m in the north west of England.

Does it matter what stage it is if they’ve said it is treatable?

When they removed mine it was 42mm. I think all of mine was invasive but I’m not sure. I’ve put myself at grade 2 but they haven’t actually said.

Don’t google anything. I’ve died over 10 times with what I’ve read on google.
Take each day as it comes and be there for your partner which it sounds like you are…

Hopefully the oncologist appointment comes through quick. Again, mine was about 2-3 weeks.

    Good luck

  • Hi Jh99,

I had very similar, I had multi focal with invasive and non invasive grade 3, Her2 positive. In all my notes they refer to the tumour sizes as a whole and similar it's a large area of 5cm and the invasive is small in comparison at 1.5cm and there seems to be no distinction between them on my diagnosis letters, but they don't stage at my hospital so I haven't really questioned it, they do use the TNM system and I am T2 which is Tumour size up to 5cm (not T1 which is tumour size up to 2cm) but as Missy219 says as long as it's treatable I try to not to drive myself crazy with all the finer details and just focus on the positives...

Best of luck with it all. X

  • Cheers Belle, you are very right along with missy219.  Thankyou for your replies. Belle your cancer certainly does sound very similar to what my mrs has. Every area of the uk seems to do it differently. The breast cancer now uk website has  pathology booklet that says it will mention the total size but it’s the invasive component that they will actually use for treatment and outlook. We had her summary do pathology report letter today pre oncologist app and it mentions chemo, radio , hormone as well as bisophonates treatment if it is her2 - which i thought was only for post menopause. Thanks and hope your treatment has or is going well
