I am female, aged 59 who had an anterior resection of anal pouch and defunctioning loop ileostomy from a lower rectal andenocarcinoma on 25/11/2019. The surgeon mentioned that I would pass mucus through the anal canal. I do pass mucus on a daily basis but throught the vagina. Is this normal or is it something I should be concerned?.
thank you for your time.
I think its worth mentioning this to your colorectal nurse specialist. Whilst some discharge from the vagina is possible from what you say it sounds as though it is more than expected. One of the surgical team may need to examine you. At some point you will no doubt be offered a dye test from the bottom to ensure the join has sealed before your ileosotomy is surgically closed. This will also be useful in this setting. It is important to understand where the excess mucus is coming from.
Remember you can also speak with the Macmillan Support Line team of experts. Phone free on 0808 808 0000 (7 days a week, 8am-8pm) or by email.
Many thanks for your prompt response, I will contact the surgical nurse this week.
