Hello,

I'm trying to find out how many centres in the UK offer Isolated Limb Infusion. Can you help?

Hi Mr Merkel

This is a very good questions but unfortunately I don't have that information.

Perhaps if you contact one of the specialist centres they may be able to help.

Good luck and best wishes

Wilma

Hello Wilma,

Thanks for getting back to me.

"one of the specialist centres..." – such as?  Can you suggest where to start?  Any Macmillan nurses who would have specialist experience?

Even a hint could be helpful.

Hello Mr Merkel

Thanks for getting back.

As I am not sure where you are, and practice varies nationally, I am based in Scotland.  Why not contact the Melanoma Clinical Nurse Specialist at your local Oncology department.  She will be able to advise where this procedure is carried out locally and perhaps be able to give you any additional information that you are seeking.

I am interested to know the reason why you are looking for this information, are you happy to share?

Hello Wilma

For what it's worth, I'm in North Wales.

Since first being diagnosed with Merkel cell carcinoma in 2009, I have been treated variously in Oxford, Bangor (North Wales), Clatterbridge, Whiston and St Helens.  I am now engaged in a legal case regarding my treatment and, as part of my research, I am trying to get some facts about the relative availability of isolated limb infusion and electro-chemotherapy. all I have been able to discover, so far, is that isolated limb infusion is performed in "a handful of centres" in the UK. It would be great if someone could tell me what "a handful" actually means in real numbers.

I'd be delighted to hear from you if you have any ideas.

Mr Merkel

I am sorry to hear that you are involved in a legal case with regards to your treatment.  Isolated Limb Perfusion (ILP) and electro-chemotherapy are very specialised procedures.  Therefore, it is not something commonly practiced.  Glasgow, where I am based does not offer electro-chemotherapy.  Patients suitable for this procedure would have to travel approximately 60 miles to the nearest Centre that does.  We have one department within our Region that offers ILP.

Therefore the phrase "a handful" really means just that you could count the number of centres offering these procedures on the one hand!  In real number terms I honestly do not have that information, hence sign posting you to one of the Specialist who may well know which other Centres Nationally undertake the procedure.

Why not call our Support Line, they may have more information on the local areas UK wide and perhaps be able to provide you with the information that you are looking for.  Or at least a bit more than you have.

The number is 0808 808 00 00 Monday to Friday, 9am-8pm

Sorry I could not be anymore help to you.

Best wishes

Wilma
