I recently went for a mammogram, and doctor found something suspicious. They carried out biopsy and a core needle biopsy. Then I was told I needed to have a lumpectomy on breast but whatever they found was non cancerous. I have now been sent for an MRI scan and am getting worried. Can anyone help on this matter

  • Hi Shelly 2102,

Thanks for getting in touch during what must be a very uncertain time for you. My name is Hayley and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists and I hope you’re finding the online community supportive.

I can appreciate where your uncertainty is coming from and I wonder if it might be best, to seek clarity from your consultant or your breast cancer specialist nurse. Surgery may be offered for a number of different reasons and your team are best placed to discuss the specifics of your care with you.

The MRI will further add to the picture of what is happening in your breast. It can provide a much more detailed picture compared to the mammogram and can help with planning for a surgery.

I appreciate that the wait for procedures and results is a very stressful time. The uncertainty that also comes at a time like this can just add to your worries. So it is important to remember to look after yourself too.

I hope this information is helpful.

    Best wishes,

    Hayley, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
