Not sure if this is the right forum. I've tried to book in for a facial, waxing, massage just to treat myself before my treatment start next week. I had my hip replaced in December and started Letrozole then. Next week it will be radiotherapy and taking Denosumab and Palbociclib.  The beautician has contacted me concerned because she has spoken to her insurers and there is concern incase any beauty treatment/massage affects the cancer, like bruising from the waxing that type of thing. It seems strange because it feels that the cancer is already stopping me from doing things that I want to do. Any advice please about beauty treatments that I could have, not nail varnish because it has never stayed on me.

  • Hi Gezzelin,

    Thanks for getting in touch.

My name is Eileen and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can appreciate you wanting to treat yourself with some pampering before starting treatment and feeling that cancer is already impacting on your ability to do so.

We know that many people going through cancer treatments find massage and other complementary therapies of benefit in helping them to cope with side effects and it is possible to have some of these therapies during treatment.

If you are planning to have a massage, there are some points that a therapist needs to be aware of when treating someone affected by cancer. In certain situations, the masseuse may need to adapt the massage technique. Therapist who are experienced in this field can be found by contacting the General Council for Massage Therapy.

Cancer treatments can cause changes to the skin and nails , perhaps making skin drier or more sensitive but there are things that can help to manage such issues.

You may find our Look Good Feel Better service of benefit. These workshops provide free skincare and makeup advice that can help to boost confidence during treatment.

Boots Macmillan Beauty Advisors have had specialist training in working with people affected by cancer and they can provide free one to one session that might be of interest. The advisors may also be able to talk to you about other beauty treatments.

I hope this is helpful but please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you need further information or support.

    Best wishes

    Eileen
