What food can my dad eat with stomach ulcers?

My dad has been diagnosed with cancer around his pancreas and liver (exact location still being investigated). He has had a camera down to his stomach which identified ulcers. He has been told he needs to eat the high fat diet to become strong enough for treatment. He is not eating much because he gets really painful indigestion. Are there any foods that would be easier to digest with his stomach ulcer situation?

  • Hello Solar10,

Thank you for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support, and welcome to our online community. My name is Annerose and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurses.

I am sorry to hear about your Dad’s diagnosis. It’s understandable that you want your Dad to be as strong as possible so he can start his treatment. Having pain after eating anything will not give your Dad the confidence to try and eat more.

Unfortunately, indigestion pain is not uncommon in people with suspected pancreatic cancer. Has he been able to tell his hospital team or GP about the pain he is experiencing? They can prescribe some medication that can help with this symptom.

It might help your Dad to try and have small meals more often throughout the day, to avoid spicy food or fizzy drinks. Sometimes a less hot meal can also make a difference.

We do have a booklet called ‘the building up diet’ with information on how to enrich food to make it more valuable when people struggle to eat a normal diet. Pancreatic Cancer UK also have information on ‘tips for having more calories’ and on diet and pancreatic cancer, including this booklet.

Sometimes is helps to speak directly to one of our nurses on the Support line, we will be more than happy to talk to you about your concerns and answer questions.

I hope this has been helpful.

    Best Wishes

    (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
