Hi,my mum has lynch syndrome and had bowel cancer back in 2015,she has regular check ups,a recent blood test show slightly raised cea markers so she went for ct scan which was normal, the dr asked for a stool sample as she is slightly anaemic and the test has come back positive for blood in stool, she had a right hemicolectomy 2015 with no further treatment, her only symptoms now is constipation which she put down to different tablets shes been put in for anxiety, she has piles but we are all very anxious as you can imagine ,she also had a colonoscopy back in July 2020 which was fine though they did tell her she has diverticulitis, I don't really know what I'm asking to be honest,I'm just so fearful.of losing her xx
Thank you for getting in touch with us, and welcome to our online community. My name is Annerose, I am one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.
It is understandable that you worry about your mum and what the increase in CEA and blood in stool could mean for her. It is a scary place to be, waiting for tests and results. But, it is encouraging, that her CT scan came back all clear. I assume your mum’s team have talked with her about the result of the scan.
A rise in CEA and blood in stool does not necessarily mean that there is a cancer present, it can also be caused by the diverticulitis your mum was diagnosed with last year as well as by piles. Other Symptoms of diverticular disease can include constipation.
It might be helpful to your mum and the family to contact her team or the Clinical Nurse Specialist and discuss this further. Talking about the concerns these symptoms are causing with the team might help, and she could ask for treatment for the constipation and ask if maybe another colonoscopy would be appropriate.
I hope this has been helpful. If you’d like to talk to one of our nurses or advisors, please don’t hesitate to give us a call on the support line on 0808 808 0000. We’re open from 8am until 8pm every day. We’d love to hear from you.
Thankyou so much for getting back to me,she hasn't had a face to face appointment for tge results yet, shes going to on 16th Apr,yesterday's blood test the nurse specialist said nothing had changed and I felt like I couldn't ask anymore questions cos I know how busy they are, presumably her cea marker and anaemia are still the same so will have to wait until next Friday when she goes for the face to face appointment, thanks for your support xx
