Lung Cancer recovery

Hi I am 11 days post operation for lung cancer. I was discharged with an ambi bag/ drain. There seems little change in drainage volume I am worried about the length of time this is taking to resolve and wonder if you can advise. I feel well in myself with some pain towards the end of day. Discharge is around 150 ml in a 24 hr period.

  • Hi Ginger Biscuit

Thanks for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support and welcome to the online community.

Glad to read that you are recovering well following your recent surgery.

The drain can stay in for approximately 2 weeks. Sometimes longer depending on the output of fluid.  We would suggest contacting your team at the hospital to discuss your individual situation.

It’s normal to have some soreness or pain for the first few weeks. It is important to tell your GP or Clinical Nurse Specialist if you require stronger medication. Relieving pain is an important part of your treatment and care.

We have a supportive lung cancer support group that you may find helpful. Support from others going through similar experiences can make such a difference at this difficult time.

As well as the online support at Macmillan, Maggie’s also offer some emotional advice and online courses that can help anyone affected with cancer.

You can also call the helpline and speak with one of our nurses, who would be more than happy to chat through your concerns.

Our number is 0808 808 0000 and we are open 7 days a week from 8am till 8pm.

    Best wishes
