Pain Killers

Hi I will be starting ABVD for HL next Tuesday, between now and then will it be ok for me to use over the counter pain killers ? Many Thanks

  • Hi Mr Anxious

Thanks for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support and welcome to the online community.

Yes, it is fine to take pain killers before or during chemotherapy.

However, during chemotherapy treatment you need to know if you have a high temperature. Some pain killers, such as, paracetamol can hide a high temperature caused by chemotherapy treatment. Please take your temperature beforehand, if you have a high temperature contact your advice line before taking paracetamol.

It would be best to avoid taking any anti-inflammatory medications as this can cause possible interactions and risks in certain haematological conditions. You could speak with your team for your individual advice about what analgesia would be most suitable and safe to use.

I see from your profile that you have joined the Hodgkin Lymphoma online support group. Support from others going through similar experiences can make such a difference to you at this difficult time.

As well as the online support at Macmillan, you may find lymphoma action helpful. They offer buddy support also.

Maggie’s also offer some emotional advice and online courses that can help anyone affected with cancer.

We are also able to offer tailored information support by weekly email . This covers a range of topics from practical to psychological support and how to manage these.

If a preferred option would be by post don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and speak to one of the nurses on the helpline for further information if needed.

    Best wishes
