Colon Cancer Stage 4

Posted by

On Friday we found out that my 76 year old mother in law has colon cancer.  We discovered yesterday through her biopsy results this has spread to her liver.  She now has to have an MRI scan.   She hasn't seen her consultant yet so all we know is that it's stage 4.  I am trying to find out as much as possible so we are prepared for the treatment and what happens next.  Please can you give me some advise.  How hopeful should we be for her full recovery.  many thanks Janine

Hi Janine,

Thank you for getting in touch with us. What an awful shock for you to find out your mother in law has a diagnosis of advanced colon cancer. It’s understandable you want to find out as much information as possible.

When you're diagnosed with cancer, you may have more tests to help determine how far it has progressed. Staging and grading the cancer will allow the doctors to determine its size, the extent of the spread and the best treatment options.

The aim of the treatment would usually be to keep the cancer under control.

I can understand this can cause a lot of uncertainty. I wonder if you or the family have thought about joining the colon group on the online community as a source of support. We also have a data base on our website called in your area. Where you can see if there is any local face to face support groups.

If you’d like to talk things through with one of the nurses, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We’re here 7 days a week, from 8am till 8pm.

Best wishes

Josie – Cancer Information Nurse Specialist.
