Secondary brain cancer- CBD oil

Hi,

I'm new on this site and I'm not sure where to find answers. My dad was diagnosed with secondary brain cancer 1.5 year ago. It has spread to the brain from his lung. He had radiotherapy at the beginning and several chemotherapy after. He also has type 1 diabetes nearly 20 years, which requires insulin injection 4 times a day. He is stable now, eating well, actually looks healthy, but not sure what to expect and how could I help him. I was reading a lot about CBD oil, and thought this could be useful for him. Unfortunately he lives in Hungary, so it is a bit difficult to buy this product. And the biggest problem is that doctors are not offering CBD oil to patients,  so makes it even more difficult. I thought I'm gonna buy it to him, and send it to Hungary.  I was wondering if anyone has the same diagnoses, experiences. I really wanna help my dad, but not sure about the right dosage and percentage. He has blood test very often, I don't know if it shows anything on the result, and I don't want them to refuse to give him chemotherapy in the future.

I appreciate all the help and information very much.

Kind regards,

Joanna19

Hi ,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. It must be difficult to offer support to your dad when you live a distance from him. It’s great that he’s looking healthy and eating well just now.

CBD in its pure form is not a controlled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act. CBD oils in it’s pure form does not contain any delta-9-tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC) and is legal if sold as a food supplement and the sellers are not making medical claims about it’s medicinal properties. If any oil or product contains THC then these are still illegal in the UK. You would need to know also about sending any supplements through customs and whether these would be allowed into Hungary.

There are many examples where people say that using CBD oil has had a dramatic effect on their health. But these are individual stories and not based on clinical research trials. If you are thinking of sending CBD oil to your dad, we suggest he talks to his healthcare team before taking it. It could also interact with any medication he currently takes.

Cancer Research UK has a science blog that discusses CBD oil and any evidence for its use. And there are certain cases where it can be prescribed legally in the UK. There is a form of cannabis that can be used to treat nausea caused by cancer treatment when all other methods have failed. However, it’s not licenced to be used to treat or prevent cancer spreading. Unfortunately, as nurses, we cannot recommend any percentage or dosage.

I hope this helps. Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you have further questions, or if you’d like to talk things through with one of our nurses, please give the support line a call.

Best wishes

Hi Jane,

Thanks for your quick response. I appreciate all your information.

The thing is CBD oil is legal in Hungary too, but you can only get it by ordering online and I'm not sure which website can I trust, as there are so many fake one with fake products. Are you able to help me how can I be sure that a company is selling pure product, please?

I also heard about CBD paste, but still don't know much about it.

Kind regards,

Joanna

Hi,

im also looking into this for myself but there isn’t a great deal of information out there as it is a relatively new product. It’s very frustrating but here’s what I know so far;

Firstly, there is no actual scientific evidence that any of the oils can cure cancer in humans. However, it hasn’t really had any proper trials either. All evidence is anecdotal (people claiming it cured their cancer).

There are two types of oil. Cannabis oil (often called RSO or Rick Simpson oil). This is illegal in the Uk and most countries as it contains THC, which is the part that gets you ‘high’. CBD oil does not contain THC, and is legal. You can buy this from Holland and Barrett.

As there isn’t much info out there, people are guessing as to what helps with what. As I understand it, the best chance of any of these oils helping is to have a mix of both CBD and THC. Dosage information is hard to come by for the thc side. You can search Rick Simpson oil. He has his own site but does not supply it. Also search joy smith for one of the most widely spread anecdotal stories. She was on this morning.

Hope me this helps somewhat

Hi Joanna19

Thanks for getting back in touch.

Unfortunately, because THC containing cannabinoids are illegal in the UK we are not able to recommend where you would be able to purchase a pure product. It may be if CBD oil with THC is legal in Hungary your dad’s hospital team will be able to help him source a pure product.

If you mean the CBD oil that is sold as a food supplement legally in the UK, we as a cancer charity can still not recommend any one product.

Your dad sounds as if he has a good quality of life just now and hopefully that continues.

Best Wishes
