Hello Yellow1,

Thank you for getting in touch and welcome to the Online Community.

The decision to have chemotherapy and radiotherapy can be difficult depending on many factors.

The majority of people who undergo standard cancer treatment, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy will not die because of the treatment.

The side effects of treatment and the severity of any side effects will vary from person to person, again depending on a wide range of factors including the type of cancer being treated, the aim of the treatment and someone’s general health.

A study published in 2016 looked at deaths in NHS England that did occur within 30 days of treatment for breast and lung cancers.

It’s important to talk through the potential risks and benefits of any cancer treatment with the specialist team to make informed decisions.

I hope this information is useful but do get back in touch if you have further questions.

Best Wishes,

Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
