Breast cancer and covid 19

Hi, my partner has breast cancer, she has recently had the lump removed and we are waiting for the results, she is very worried about this covid 19 virus going around, she is staying in and now with the kids of school too, we are keeping them from socialising, but I still have to goto work, i am a vehicle technician, so my job involves me getting in and out of vehicles, seeing customers and being amongst a few work colleagues, I am taking measures like wearing gloves, washing hands and using hand sanitizer as much as I can, my partner has pointed out that I should be distant from work colleagues but most often we reqiure each and others help, also without thinking last week I went down the road with a customer to listen for a noise, or other colleagues are dropping or picking customers up. Have I any rights on refusing to do this also may I have the right to maybe stay at home incase of catching it. My partner is very worried which is very understandable, and I really don't know what to do, I need to work to continue to pay bills.

I’m sorry to hear about your partner’s diagnosis, and how much the current covid-19 situation is impacting on your family. How is she finding the recovery from surgery so far?

I can understand your concerns, and we have a couple of teams on our support line who might collaboratively be able to give you some answers.

Our team of Cancer Information Nurses can talk to you about how at risk your partner may be, considering that she has had surgery, to help you to make an informed decision on how to go forwards.

Our Work Support Team can also talk to you about approaching your employer with your concerns and having this conversation with them. They may also be able to guide you on questions you might need to ask, regarding pay and your rights as an employee.

Finally, our Welfare Rights Team and our Financial Guidance Team can discuss with you if you may be entitled to any financial support at this time, including benefits, grants, help with mortgage payments, and personal finance.

Please bear in mind that due to the current situation with Coronavirus some of our teams are experiencing higher volumes of calls and emails, so there may be a longer wait than we’d usually expect. It may take longer than usual for our nurses to respond to emails.

Jandr, I appreciate that this is a worrying time, but I do think that our teams on the support line will be able to help you to decide on how to go forwards and what support will be available to you as you do this.
