Critical illness cover definitions

I have critical illness cover included with my life insurance.
I have recently been diagnosed with lobular breast cancer and had surgery to remove the lump a clearance of lymph nodes as it was found there too.

My insurer defines less advanced breast cancer as:

Breast – Cancer in situ of the breast with surgery to remove

This would mean 25% of the amount insured or £20,000 whichever is lower.

According to their definition, is mine less advanced?

I am most likely going to be having radiotherapy to zap any stray cells and then drug treatment for 5 years.

  • Hello ,

Thanks for getting in touch. I’m sorry to hear about your diagnosis and the current situation but hopefully we can provide some support at this difficult time.

I completely appreciate why you would be asking about this as it can be hard to know where your diagnosis fits in with their conditions.

Regarding your question, it may be better to ask your insurer directly about this. If you submit a claim, part of what the insurer will do is write to your medical team to get detailed information about your condition. This is then assessed against the terms and conditions to determine if you meet the criteria for the claim.

It can take a number of weeks for a claim to be looked at, so it might help to ask the insurer how long they think it may take them to make a decision. It may also help to chase the medical team, as delays can sometimes be due to medical reports taking some time to be returned.

You should be kept up to date throughout the process and if more information is needed, the insurance company should let them know.

If the claim is successful, the payment will usually be sent to the bank account given on the claim form and is tax free. If the claim is declined, the insurer will explain why.

You may also want to ask your insurer if you have a benefit called Early Days Payment. This is a feature of some policies that pays a lump sum when a claim is initially submitted to help with any immediate financial costs while the claim is being. This amount is deducted from the sum assured if the claim is successful.

I hope you’ve found this information useful, please get back in touch if you’ve any further questions regarding this.

    All the best,

    Chris Harrower
