Two primary cancers

Hi,

I have a question regarding my recent diagnoses.

I was diagnosed with melanoma and breast cancer within 2months of each other. I am currently on two treatment pathways - two hospitals and yeah its a bit chaotic!

I have asked the question of my consultants about having two 'primaries' at the same time but have yet to have much of a response as they are focussed on getting me free of the cancers.

Is having two primaries at the same time rare enough to ask for genetic testing? My child had a very rare cancer sometime ago ...

Thanks

Thank you for contacting us here at Macmillan Cancer Support.  My name is Rae and I am a cancer information nurse specialist.

It sounds like you are having a very challenging time at the moment.

It would be worth having a conversation with your consultants about genetic testing.  There is a recognised connection between breast cancer and melanoma.  While one does not directly cause the other, large-scale studies have found that having one of these cancers can increase the risk of developing the other.

Please do feel that you can speak to our nurses on the Support Line if you wish to chat through any of the above information, or just reach out for some support.

    Best wishes,

    Rae
