anal soreness

Good Morning,

Some advice please.

I had a colonoscopy and scan over a week ago. The colonoscopy revealed at the Proximal descending colon there was a tumour of malignant appearance 35cm from the anal verge. Six biopsies were taken. Additionally, polyps were removed and Diverticular disease noted at the anal margin. I was informed immediately that it was bowel cancer. I now await my PET scan report, team meeting and treatment plan.

My immediate issue needing advice is soreness and pressure in my anal entrance/groin area especially when seated. This is continual and varies in terms of pain and pressure but never acutely painful. It does alleviate somewhat when standing and walking. My colonoscopy report did state that there was Diverticula disease grade II extending left and right of colon with no inflammation or complications. Could it be this causing the problem? Otherwise, I feel very well. eating normally and pass fairly normal bowel stools without straining.

Thanks

  • Dear

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our Online community, I’m Sue one of the cancer information nurse specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

This sounds like such a difficult time, we’re glad you have reached out for some support.

I’m afraid as nurses on the Support Line, we have no access to NHS medical records and are unable to diagnose what may be causing your symptoms. However, we would always recommend seeking a medical assessment, so you get the right help and support as soon as possible.

Although you are waiting for an upcoming hospital appointment, we always encourage reporting any concerns in the interim period. Please do contact your GP about what is happening so they can medically assess you to establish the cause. If you are struggling to get an appointment you can also contact the NHS 111. Whilst it’s good to hear your symptoms are not acutely painful, if they were to become worse, please do attend A&E or contact 999.

As well as our Online Community we offer lots of other ways we can support you with your recent diagnosis of bowel cancer. Being told you have cancer can cause all sorts of uncertainties and emotions.  We also offer bite sized trusted information which can be sent by email, offering lots of tailored support.

It can also be an anxious time waiting for test results and an individual treatment plan following the MDT meeting . Sometimes writing things down to ask can help in preparation for your consultation to discuss this. We have lots of questions about treatment which may be helpful.

You’ve also mentioned being diagnosed with Diverticulitis, the charities Guts UK and Bladder and Bowel Community offer lots of information about this condition.

It’s really good to hear despite what is happening you are feeling very well and eating normally. Eating well and keeping active with cancer is important and can help to give someone back a sense of control. The cancer charity Penny Brohn also offers lots of  health and wellbeing support.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have any further questions, please get in touch by email, webchat or phone. You can call us free from landlines and from most mobile phone networks on 0808 808 00 00, 7 days a week, 8am – 8pm.

    Take care, sending best wishes

     Sue
