I’m getting conflicting information about hair care. I have long thick curly hair and due to start chemo next week. I have said i will try the cold cap (not sure if I’ll cope with it though) should i cut my hair to shoulder length prior? Can i put my hair in a bobble after? Thanks for any advice

  • Hi Tink_

Thank you contacting us. I’m Lorna one of the cancer information nurse specialists on the support line.

I can see from your profile you have joined a few of our forums, I hope you are getting a lot of information and support from them.

I’m sorry to hear that the information you have had about hair care and scalp cooling has been conflicting.

A lot of people have come across misinformation, and some have cut their hair short beforehand. You may experience some hair loss, and a general thinning of your hair. It can be helpful to keep some layers, this allows you to style it and cover any thin areas that may appear. The most important thing is to keep your hair in good condition and tangle free.

You may want to trim any dry ends for example, to avoid tangles and make it easier for a comb to pass through. This avoids unnecessary tugging of your fragile hair. You might find this information helpful in preparing for scalp cooling. This information talks you through preparing your hair on the day. Taking care of your new hair explains how to look after fragile hair during chemotherapy. You can use a bobble after treatment but one that does not cause your hair to tangle in it.

I hope this information is helpful. Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you have any more questions.

You can always give us a call. You can talk to one of our nurses on the support line. It’s a free phone number on 0808 808 0000 and we are here 7 days a week, 8am-8pm or email us.
