Brachytherapy Radiation Treatment for a mild prostate cancer.

I was diagnosed with low level prostate cancer such as to be treated by brachytherapy radiation. I am now 78 years of age and active.

In November 2017 I had a TURP operation. This was followed in May 2018 by a brachytherapy implant of 135 seeds.

Everything continued comfortably and consistent with PSA level down in the region of 0.025 which is good. However in November 2020 I started to feel a discomfort on the soles of BOTH feet at the same time. By April 2021 I took my case to my GP for assessment. Since then various tests have been carried out up into now, but all to no positive conclusion. The discomfort has since worsened into my feet as a whole. It now has left me waiting to be assessed by a neurologist.

As the problem ocurred simultaneously in Both feet, to me it points to a common region on the body, in the groin, hip, lower back. I raised the possibilty with the Urology Department that delivered the treatment, as to whether Brachytherapy Radiation could impact on the nerves in the groin area and compromise the nerves down both legs. The answer was no.

As the situation has worsened I returned to the same question in asking Macmillan for your response.

Thank you Mike

  • Hi Mike,

I am pleased that you have been referred to a neurologist. They are the right specialist team to assess fully what is happening and hopefully come up with some answers for you.

In the meantime, it is understandable that you have concerns. If you feel things are getting worse, it is important to let your hospital team or GP know straight away.

Peripheral neuropathy is a rare side effect of prostate radiotherapy. It can develop months, or even years after treatment, causing symptoms such as loss of sensation, tingling, weakness or pain. We can't tell you this is what is causing your symptoms.

Your urology clinical nurse specialist, consultant, or neurologist should be able to tell you if what you are experiencing is likely to be a late effect of brachytherapy, as they know exactly what treatment you have had.

You may find it useful to call us on 0808 808 0000 to talk things through with someone. We can’t make a diagnosis on the support line, but talking to a nurse may help you to clarify questions that you want to ask your team or the neurologist.

    Take care,
